The video above was posted in a Politics thread, and it called to mind Roger McGuinn’s autobiographical acoustic performance at SOPAC on Saturday, when he mentioned how much it meant to him for Dylan and the other all-stars to choose his arrangement of My Back Pages for this concert and to grant him the honor of singing the opening verse.
It’s still hard for me to believe it was my honor to sit just a couple of dozen of feet away from a giant like Roger McGuinn, who at 82 remained nimble-fingered on guitar and banjo. (His voice was even reedier with age, but hell if I cared.)
My favorite anecdote he shared was about his friend Peter Fonda’s asking him for a new song for Fonda’s low-budget motorcycle movie. McGuinn suggests that Fonda ask Dylan instead. Fonda flies to New York and finds Dylan in a bar. Dylan scribbles something on a cocktail napkin, hands it to Fonda and says: “Give this to McGuinn. He’ll know what to do with it.” Fonda flies back go L.A. and shows up at McGuinn’s door with the napkin. On it is written: “The river flows. It flows to the sea. Wherever that river goes, that’s where I want to be.”
McGuinn takes the Ballad of Easy Rider from there.
Sure, My Brilliant Friend is a joint HBO-Italian production based on a highly-regarded four-book series by Elana Ferrante. It is subtitled, which probably hurts its US popularity. It starts with two bright young girls who become friends in a poor, rough postwar neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. In the third episode, adolescent actresses take over and they take the series through its third season, about when the characters are about 30.
Thanks! I just started Slow Horses on AppleTV but I will try this when I finish that.
Oh, the things Putin has done, always looking out for world peace, right? Here’s a totally short list of all his “acts of kindness”:
Chechnya (1999-2000) – Just a small act of "helping" the region after Russia suffered from a few pesky separatists. He leveled Grozny for good measure. But hey, it was all about "restoring order."
Georgia (2008) – Just a friendly visit to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The whole invasion thing? Minor detail. He was merely "peacekeeping," clearly misunderstood.
Ukraine, Part 1 (2014) – When Crimea was feeling homesick for Mother Russia, Putin was there, annexing it with care. Forget international law; Crimea needed a hug.
Ukraine, Part 2 (2014-present) – Eastern Ukraine? Yeah, Putin’s just been giving out "military supplies" to rebels because they were so under-equipped. He swears those Russian soldiers are just on vacation!
Syria (2015) – In an effort to "fight terrorism," Putin’s air force provided some friendly fireworks over civilian areas. His mission to prop up Assad was just a heartwarming tale of sticking by an old friend.
Ukraine, Part 3 (2022-present) – Oh, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022? Putin calls it a "special military operation," not an invasion. Just casually wiping out cities and causing a refugee crisis, but all in the name of de-Nazification, because clearly, Ukraine is swarming with those.
Cyberattacks – Who needs boots on the ground when you’ve got hackers? Russian interference in U.S. elections (2016) and cyber-attacks across Europe are just his way of being involved in everyone's digital lives.
Such a record of “peacekeeping”! One might almost think he's out to win some kind of prize for "most misunderstood leader." Surely, it's the West overreacting, right?

Since we are lacking data, we have to fall back on the general condition that, in the aggregate, unions are good for both workers and communities

He obviously works for the CIA or one of those NGO fronts for the CIA, and was under orders to assassinate Trump for Zelensky.
At least, that's what I gather from reading Max Blumenthal on the Twitter.

I wonder if Springsteen drove a lot of votes to Obama. It’s probably a statistic that’s hard to really pin down.
The graphic showing internet traffic to vote.gov from Swift’s instagram posting was cool in that regard.
