Discussion: What does Putin want (and whatabout it)

And so what -- why do you care?  Do you really believe the people in Russia are dreaming of a western invasion to liberate them from a psychotic tyrant?  I'm sure they have lots of complaints but would take him over anyone we would install.

Relevant to Ukrainians, who have been facing the choice between Russian autocracy and European democracy since independence and who -- to Putin's anger -- keep rejecting the Russian offering.

The whole point of the article on polling, which has been misrepresented as showing "support for Putin", is that the people of Russia aren't allowed to have enough information, to even consider the possibility that the "psychotic tyrant" could be removed. The people of Ukraine did have more information, and deliberately made the choice not to be dominated from Moscow - which is why Putin invaded.

He must be doing better in the polls.  They have the sharp knives out.

have you ever been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia?

Mental health professionals no longer use the term paranoid schizophrenia.  It's also not a good response to nan's points even if you disagree with her.

Gee whiz, Ridski, even this Luddite knows how to enlarge a story, with just two fingers!

you know, some of us use a PC and not a phone. and enlarging something that's already fuzzy just gives you big fuzzy. it's very hard to read. Like  3 Likes

Discussion: Bring Out Your Dead! The celebrity death thread....

Holy ****, Steve Albini! RIP to the fuckign man! Apart from Big Black being a massive influence on me, he produced some of the best albums of my early twenties, when he was in his late twenties. I followed his funny and sometimes poignant posts on Twitter and immediately followed him again on Bluesky when I moved over there. His political views, his musical knowledge... Heck I didn't know him and I'm gonna miss him. 7 years older than me. Jesus.

What happened on university campuses across the country by undereducated “students” - the generation of kids who were denied high school normalcy and proms and  graduations, and attended classes in a vacuum on Zoom — and who revealed themselves to be  as dumb as rocks in understanding the history of the USA and any other country for that matter.

Your posts here clearly demonstrate that it is you who in undereducated, not the students. You literally spend your days posting factual distortions, misunderstandings and out right lies.

yeah, that comment by mt reveals so much.

She blames a few months of Zoom classes for an "undereducated" generation of students. She's repeated this talking point many times already.

mt, please tell us how they're dumb as rocks regarding history? What do they get wrong that apparently you think that you get right?

Why do you hate these kids so much? They're protesting the deaths of 10's of thousands of innocent civilians that the US is complicit in. Don't they deserve some credit for that? Even if you don't approve of very tactic?

Why do you think there are "outside agitators"? The right always blames protests they don't agree with on outside actors? But has there ever been any proof of their allegations? I think "never" is the right answer there.

Can you do some independent thinking here? Use some compassion and empathy instead of mindlessly repeating talking points?

there are a couple of things we can stipulate to. First, that Oct 7 was an atrocity worthy of outrage and strict condemnation. Second, there is no doubt a segment of the pro-Palestinian demonstrations that is anti-semitic (no doubt there is also a segment of pro-Israel supporters who are anti-semitic as well. Unfortunately there's a lot of anti-semitism in this country all around).

but the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and children and the resulting humanitarian crisis is its own atrocity. The vast majority of people protesting just want the mass killings and maiming to stop.

The upcoming issue of The Atlantic has an article with a very persuasive premise, that "What Putin Wants", and what similar autocrats want, it to discredit democracy. I don't have a subscription,

Discussion: The Maplewood Glee Club Goes "Back to the '70s!”

Break out the bellbottoms and platform shoes! The Maplewood Glee Club is going "Back to the '70s" with their annual spring concert, Sunday, May 19 at 4pm. The chorus comprises over 60 members from dozens of North Jersey towns, and the show will feature loud ties, special guests, and the ‘70s-soaked music of Elton John, Queen, ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, Eagles, Tina Turner, and more.

The guests include not one, not two, but three choirs from Columbia High School, as well pianist Emma Wang from Livingston High School, co-recipient of the glee club’s 2024 John A. Plumer Memorial Scholarship.

"We’re thrilled to share the stage with these amazing performers," said Josh Adler, President of the glee club. "And we can’t wait to fire up our time machine and take you back to the days of classic rock, AM hits, disco, and pet rocks. There’s something for everyone in this show.”

Also performing will be the glee club's two small groups, the Unusual Suspects and the Doo-Wop Preservation Society, who will sing ‘70s songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine” and a selection from the Broadway and movie hit, Grease.

“Back to the ‘70s” takes place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 767 Prospect Street in Maplewood, Sunday, May 19 at 4pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at tinyurl.com/MGCSeventies. The show will also be livestreamed.

For more about the glee club, visit their website at www.maplewoodgleeclub.com or email info@maplewoodgleeclub.org.

Yeah, I have such a good time here on MOL, I want to get attacked by a mob at Words Bookstore (which I frequently visit).

What you want is this: You want everybody to accept your sources at face value while you write off everyone else’s at face value. You want to be able to call others here whiny, confused neocons while you bridle at the mildest gibes and quotes of your own comments. We’re all free to read, reply or skip as we see fit. So let the good times roll: With any number of easy fixes at your disposal, there’s no reason to be frustrated by wasted time.

If indeed some outside agencies and   agitators —which appears likely — were stirring the pot (who paid for all those pop-up tents?) then the consequences can be shared, but in no way should the students get a pass for being gullible in the extreme.

How much do you think a pop-up tent costs? You can get one on Amazon for under $40 and have it delivered in two days. (h/t John Oliver)

"Who paid for the tents?" is another one of those "IT'S GEORGE SOROS" rants.

Because the ranters are so unhinged that they freely use old antisemitic tropes at the same time they're calling all the protesters antisemitic.
