Will Herschel Win?

as far as I'm concerned, this is mostly a non-issue with regard to the Georgia senate race. RFK and Hillary Clinton became NY residents strictly to run for senate from that state, so it's not like this is unprecedented.

However, the state of Texas may be calling on Herschel to pay back that tax break they gave him.

Non issue?

Its OK to mock our constitutional requirement for residency because some have done it before? Are there any other constitutional requirements or laws that we can forget by treating them as non-issues?

I have an idea. After the 1920's census, congress did not reapportion even though its a constitutional requirement. Should we have done that this time?

Constitution requires the person to be a resident of the state when "chosen."  See Art. 1, Sec. 3, Clause 3.  That would be on Election Day.  There was a residency issue in the NYC Council a few years ago resulting in the City having to conduct a second special election to fill the vacancy because the person who won the first time was not a resident of the District on the date of the election.  (N.B.  He moved into the District and won the second special election.)  Lester Chang might not be seated by the New York Assembly even though he won the election beating incumbent Peter Abbate because he may have lived in the County for the required period of time prior to Election Day.

And again

A former longtime girlfriend of Republican senatorial candidate Herschel Walker has come forward to detail a violent episode with the football star, who she believes is “unstable” and has “little to no control” over his mental state when he is not in treatment.
The woman, Dallas resident Cheryl Parsa, described an intimate and tumultuous five-year relationship with Walker in the 2000s, beginning shortly after his divorce and continuing for a year after the publication of his 2008 memoir about his struggle with dissociative identity disorder (DID), once known as multiple personality disorder.
Parsa is one of five women who were romantically involved with Walker who spoke to The Daily Beast for this article. All of them described a habit of lying and infidelity—including one woman who claimed she had an affair with Walker while he was married in the 1990s. All five women said they were willing to speak to expose the behavior of the man they now see running for Senate.

Not that it will hurt him with the Republican or evangelical base. Lying and infidelity, as shown us by Trump, now seems to a desirable trait. Evangelical and family values leaders still support him.

I'm thinking should Trump be elected he can get congress to create a Department of Family Values, replacing the HEW Department. He could make Walker the head of that department.

Hershel Walker, Secretary of Family Values.  oh oh

if someone meets the letter of the law by fulfilling a state's residency requirements by the date of the election, how is that mocking the constitution? Has anyone uncovered evidence that Walker skirted GA's requirements for residency? He registered there to vote in 2021, so he must have some legal place of residence there.

the real issue seems to be tax evasion in TX if you ask me.

Mocking vs. doing something illegal have different meanings.

I guess I just think there are about 100 more important reasons why Walker would be a terrible senator.

Warnock wins.

Just unbelievable that it was so close.

60,000 lead at the moment - that's more like it!  What a relief!

My bet is that despite all of these very bizarre things he says, he will come uncomfortably close to winning. I will go out on a limb and say a difference of less than 25,000 I

I’m happy to be wrong here! The lead is something like 96,000 at this point. Warlock getting a full six year term is great.

What this tells me is that Democrats need to be prepared to fight back against better quality candidates in the 2026 election though.  A few really bad candidates lost this year in some elections that might have looked different. I think Republicans have wised up to that. The problem for them is getting more winnable candidates through the primaries.

that’s why I feel trumpenstein will not be the nominee….

They haven't wised up. Their extremely horrible, abysmal, bottom of the barrel candidate managed to get within 1.4 % of winning.

Irony: Any other GOP candidate would have received as many votes as Walker got in the Georgia Senate election. Maybe any other candidate would certainly have received more.

My point is they are somewhat handcuffed by the primary process. If enough registered Republicans want Trump (or any other candidate) there’s not much the GOP establishment can do.

Walker won the Republican primary in Georgia with 68% of the vote. You can blame the GOP for not pushing back on him as a candidate but ultimately Georgia Republicans picked him.

If the same thing happens in 2024, if Trump wins the most primary votes it’s a nightmare for Republicans. Do they line up behind him as their only chance to regain the White House?

Do they attempt to block his nomination at the convention? That’s a legal morass in the making. Trump would drag everything into court and blow up the Republican presidential campaign.

If Trump is an active candidate in the Republican Party in a year it’s going to be a headache for them. He’s got his own supporters and his own fundraising apparatus. So this Senate runoff (and midterm) has been informative that Trump candidates are toxic for the GOP. But what can they do about it?

Make your phone calls. Nuff said. Sheesh

Do you work with the Warnock team to get a call list?

If you go on my Facebook page you would see my posts about volunteering with various groups to make calls. They are in charge of the call lists and we use automated dialers, which disguise our number. Depending on the voter, timeline, there are various scripts we are to follow. On the day before we were even told to leave messages to vote and for who and where given who the voters were that we were calling

Consider helping the next important election. Look into Montclair Dems, etc.
