Sonny's Bagels

it was the place to be this morning. Ran into several friends getting and eating yummy bagels

So went in today to get some frozen bagels (still the best deal in town) for the son who is coming in for a visit for a while and who loves Sonny's bagels (although he and his friends will still get the Taylor ham, egg and cheese on a bagel at the Chat as they say). Had a great conversation with the owner about what he's offering. Based on that I cancelled my baked salmon large order I was to bring down to my sister's next week from Goldberg's deli and he's going to provide it to me. He uses a well known fish wholesaler based out of Brooklyn and his price is far, far less expensive than Goldberg's. And he gave me at taste to confirm that the piece I'll get will taste like I had only moister given I am getting the whole package. Jason, the owner, was as personable and helpful as one could be and the bagels look like the ones we always used to get. Kudos to improvements and long live Sonny's!

Another Festivus miracle!

Poorly kept secret:  everybody gets their smoked fish from Acme.  Really.

yep. From Acme. Nearly half the price Goldberg's wanted.

I was a little bummed that my everything bagel with butter was extremely undercooked and inedible this morning. One blip on an otherwise perfect experience.

Costco too! ( different Brand same family)

And Costco smoked salmon is wild and has no nitrites. Acme is farmed and has nitrites.

Baked salmon not smoked cramer and the Acme package for the baked salmon has no nitrates. The smoked salmon I am bringing down was bought at Costco  (and one can buy it almost as cheaply for a single package at Costco).

Enjoy!

Are you being sarcastic cramer?  Check out this link. Ruby Bay is an Acme product number one. Number two not all Costcos sell it and number three the Acme package of Baked salmon had no nitrates. I know how to read. This 2.3 pound package that Sonny's is selling to me after he slices it is just what I want.

Oh and while we're at it, check out this link although the package that I'll be getting is called baked not kippered. Sheesh.

And although I prefer not farm raised and purchase that for the lox and regular cooking, once a year I'll deal with farm raised if in fact the salmon that Acme uses. Sheesh again.

Enjoy!  (Not being sarcastic.)

When I worked in food recycling, we had three smoked fish customers, Acme, Banner and Marshall.  We also had H & H bagels as customers. The smoked fish residue went to bait. H & H went to chicken feed.

When I visited the smoked fish places, I schnorred from each place. I liked Banner's the best for its milder taste.

I was a frequent visitor to H & H as Herman was always behind on paying our invoice and I would be assigned to collect a check. (I guess the mailman doesn't pick up on the U.W.S. and later in Secaucus.)

Anyway, each visit was was concluded with several pounds of bagels in a delivery box. After sharing with the office staff and drivers, I still had a pound or two to take home, plus a cinnamon raisin, toasted with butter to drive back to Secaucus.

Damn. All that stuff was good.

Follow up to my earlier post about my interaction with Jason, the new owner, and buying baked salmon to bring down to relatives for the holidays. As promised the 2.3 pound package of baked salmon was ready for me on Wednesday morning. It was sliced according to my instructions. Jason wasn't there but when I walked in there was someone there (not helping customers) who got my salmon and I was able to charge it and be in and out in less than 5 minutes. She pointed out two things: first she wanted to know if I wanted the container Jason has put the wrapped salmon in (but it wasn't necessary since it was wrapped well and then contained for the oils in a plastic bag). Second, she pointed out the handwritten note Jason wrote: "Wendy, the last 2 slices didn't slice well so I am not charging you for those. You are paying for 2.1 pounds and not 2.3 pounds."  Jason you and your wonderfully improved Sonny's rocks! Thank you. The salmon was delicious and it was the best gift that my sister specifically asked me to get for her and our family.

Just wanna say that I ventured back to SOMa today to indulge in my absolute favorite Mplwd sammich (I like it even better that The Gate's Rueben), The #5 at Bagel Chateau: grilled pastrami & Swiss on a (toasted egg) bagel. As you'd expect, it comes with chips & a pickle; somehow I feel that even my Cardiologist would approve...

-s.

BTW: There's been some interior generification at the Chateau, making me wonder what's in the future for this bastion of good food & amity.
