Respond over or under quoted text?

As a Luddite spokesperson, I prefer  "under" .

And can we have a back to discussions spot on the bottom?

(After struggling to figure out what language some geeky posters speak, this is the best way I can describe what I think should be added!

Re 'Back to Discussions', I said the same thing, but was then alerted to the fact that clicking on 'Maplewood Online' in the upper left does the same thing and I've now shifted that habit successfully.

I vote for flexibility and choice, please, if it's possible.

It's not uncommon to want to post something with comments interwoven around several quotes or attachments. I agree it should be clearer to see where we can insert around quotes and attachments -where we should place our cursor for our own words - because even with the edit function, we can't do this.

If we can't have this option now, can we build it in later?

If the default cursor position is moved to "under", I think it will solve most of the issues.  If the quoted area can be made more visible, that would be great also, but less "necessary" if the cursor position is adjusted.

Actually, now that I re-read the comments, it isn't clear to me that this was ever about more than where to put the cursor.

mtierney, If you hit Maplewood Online--always on the top left of your screen--it will take you back to discussions.

Another vote for 'under' here...

I like it both ways...

You can't have default cursor placement both ways.  But you can move the cursor to wherever you want it.  oh oh

DaveSchmidt says to SouthernBaron:  "I hope that somewhere Gibbon, between footnotes, is enjoying these as much as I."

yes!  where is my ROTFL emoticon??

If someone quotes a previous post it is usually because they are responding to the thoughts or information contained therein.  It is clearer if the original text appears before the response.

LOL

Under, it make logical sense.

Bottom's the obvious place, but every now and then you have to go on top.

Careful there young fella... this is a family site.

(Cross posting somewhat from the "Official New Forum" thread)

Not sure what is now planned for this, but I've noticed that when I place the cursor below the quoted text, if I accidentally backspace into the quote, there seems to be no way to get back out of the quote.  At that point, the only way to get it right is to delete the whole thing and start over with the quote.

That just happened to me. I cut and pasted from the quote section to the "original material" section.

Looking into the editor script - it appears to be a known bug.  I would say for now cut and paste your response on top if there's still the blank space there - or bold your response to differentiate it.  You can't go from quote mode to normal.  Very annoying.

We'll note and follow this annoyance and try and figure out a workaround.  If all else fails we may end up with a different editor down the road.

Jamie - Is it possible to change the default cursor position? (i.e. the premise of your OP, if I am interpretting it correctly.)  It seems that the majority prefers that positioning and the others can always move the cursor.  Plus, if the cursor is placed there by default there may be less likelihood of an errant move into the quote space.

I've changed my mind. I'm all about the over. I want you to read what I have to say before you get into the weeds. Narcissistic? Perhaps. You got s problem with that? :sarcastic emoticon:

I've been used to being an MOL under for so long that it would be simplest to continue in that position. Besides, I like to see what people are responding to, rather than reading their remarks out of the blue. If suddenly we were switched from unders to overs it would take at least two days to get used to it.

It is driving me crazy trying to read threads where some people post responses above, and others below. Makes things extremely confusion.

So I guess we don't have a definitive answer to this yet, or are a lot of people bucking the "under" default?

After a few weeks of both, I still have a strong preference for Under.

If there is any way to bear influence on people, please advocate for posting under.

Agreed.

The best way to do this would be to default the cursor position to under. I really thought that this would have happened by now ... Jamie????

I'll check into this - if placing the cursor is not possible - we may be able to take the space away at the top - which may clue people in to type below. Then we run the risk of people typing in the top quote. We have a few higher priorities at the moment -but if this is an easy tweak, then we'll implement it.

I hope emoticons and the draft option are on your priorities list, Jamie
