Open up America "AGAIN?"

We're feeling kind of fragile over here. It's hard to be in a pandemic while your President is basically missing in action as you watch your country go down the tubes.  LOL

Don't worry about it, Ms. Joanne.  You're having a completely different experience of this in Australia, then we are here.  You have a competent national government which has been able to actually respond intelligently.

Funny how Australia is so much closer to, and trades so much with China, and somehow wasn't as affected by whatever it is Trump blames China for, making the pandemic worse here in the US.

I was not offended and, in fact, appreciated your perspective.

DB, she is a valued member of this community and brings a different point of view. Unlike the Trumpites I believe this is one world. And nothing proves that more than a Pandemic.

And Australia's government is conservative, so it's not even about left vs right per se

She was scolding us. That's not a point of view. That's an attitude.

You’re still something else, DB. Always good for a chuckle.

I did not see it as scolding and I doubt she meant it that way.

Would it better to suggest there will be no recovery of the American economy. The country slammed down several weeks ago. We pray that soon we will witness a new beginning for us here and globally. A “reopening”.

As POTUS, he is, indeed, trying to make America great once more.

.

Even better than that would be for people who don't know what they are talking about to stand aside quietly and watch and learn from those who do.  Even though this will cost nothing whatsoever, this will never happen.  Many of these people spread falsehood and ignorance every single day and present a holier than thou demeanor.   Ignorance loves company.

There's nothing to be done with these people.  I hope that once they are gone, the next generation will learn from having seen them pollute the world.

wow, I hadn't seen this before.  This is full-on delusional thinking.  All Trump is doing now is flailing desperately to save his reelection prospects.  And it's not making us "great."  It's making things worse.

we should put this in perspective the very loud voices demanding the country "open up" now are a relatively small minority.  We should ignore them, but we can't because our idiot president and idiot GOP governors are among that minority.

In their latest poll (conducted May 3-5), The Economist/YouGov found that only 11 percent of adults believed it was safe to end social distancing and reopen businesses right now. Six percent said it would be safe in about two weeks, and another 19 percent said it would be in a month or so. A plurality (29 percent) thought it would take several months, and 15 percent even said a year or longer. A Morning Consult survey taken April 29-30 found that just 20 percent of registered voters thought the economy should reopen in April (i.e., immediately) or May, 37 percent said June or July, 16 percent said August or September, and 12 percent said October or later. And a May 5 poll from Global Strategy Group and GBAO for left-leaning firm Navigator Research found that 60 percent of Americans opposed reopening the country in the next few weeks, versus 36 percent who supported it. Finally, a May 2-5 poll by Civiqs for Daily Kos asked respondents flat out whether they supported having a stay-at-home order in place in their state: Sixty-five percent said yes, and 29 percent said no.

Most Americans Think It’s Too Soon To Return To What Life Was Like Pre-Pandemic

Gov. Cuomo’s remarks today were, again, succinct and pragmatic, with the job of getting back to a new normal stressed. His cup was half full in regard to the first time ever of shutting down the subways at night for disinfecting: 2,000 homeless, who were sleeping on the trains, were given help and alternatives to that inhumane reality.

Not a lecture as to whose fault it was — theirs or failure of government, etc — this is not the time for pointing fingers, but an opportunity for positive action to seek immediate solutions. It very well not be the virus which made sleeping in a subway car the best choice. It may be the virus which will expose the failure and missteps of society in our old normal world.

That cartoon says kind of the opposite of the sentiment of your post.

It would be nice if people here didn't post "cartoons" produced by ignorant bigots.

"It may be the virus which will expose the failure and missteps of society in our old normal world."

This is "our only hope" (as Leia would say) in the situation we find ourselves in.  So much to fix, so little time.  And is there the will?  I can manage to be hopeful maybe twice a week.

If anyone is going to portray Gov. Andrew Cuomo, I think this is how most of us see him. Just in case someone from Mars looks at this thread in the future.

I have no skill as a caricature artist, but I am a realistic portrait artist and in my estimation the artist above did a lousy job.

even the artist thinks he did a lousy job since he felt the need to include a Cuomo button to identify the figure.

Conservative cartoons always need to be over-explained to the target audience.

There’s an old scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid where Butch and Sundance leap off a cliff because they have no other choice unless they want to be captured.

There’s a current commercial in which a guy leaps into a volcano to appease the gods so rain will fall and the crops will grow.

Like Gov. Lou Reed in the cartoon, I worry about that guy.

Not really. The news of late has been about  red state crazies needing to have their hair done, etc., risking their lives and the lives of others. Serious concerns, of course,

But, for our metro region, the enormity of getting us back up and running is daunting. Yet, baby steps will prove or disprove that we will survive. Courage required.

FWIW, as I have mentioned here more than once, the governors of New York and New Jersey have excelled in offering daily updates and advice. Kudos for steadying leadership.

Not really? Your post praises Cuomo, and the cartoon trashes him.

Seems pretty opposite to me.

As usual, I don't think mtierney had the same take away as the rest of us.

I  think the unflattering cartoon/caricature shows a man besieged by the overwhelming task of getting New Yorkers and New York back up and running. And he has been on the job for what, 160+days, with no end in sight? He looks haggard to me.

Speaking of cartoonists’ license in their assignments, has no one anything to comment on the other cartoon depictions? I guess you all can’t relate to the blatant put-downs of your  cruelly depicted fellow Americans?

Ah, this explains much. Hypocrisy seems to not be very evident to you.

 Say what?

The main point of the cartoon you posted was to show how Cuomo could be seen as a hypocrite. But that interpretation was not included in your description of the cartoon.

There's a slight resemblance to Chris Christie, who is on the TV this morning pushing Trump's "it's time to reopen, no matter who dies" argument.

Wrong take-away, but I would expect no less.

No one cares to comment on the other cartoon?

first of all, it was the absolute correct take away.

Secondly, taken as a whole your posts are completely incoherent.  At times you seem to be praising Trump's reaction to the virus, and talking about how we need to be courageous and start reopening businesses.  Then you post a cartoon that rightly shows how reopening businesses would lead to more infections.  It can't be BOTH courageous and foolish to reopen can it?

Everything the crowd is saying is on cards, yet all the mouths are wide open.

(Aha!)
