I hope everyone is taking notes

Dead eyes, dead soul, dead brain.

unfortunately, not a dead brain. An active, sharp and evil brain.

He is quite good at this. Insidious.

True believer and a rat-faced liar. Highly dangerous and frightening combination. If the eyes are the gateway to the soul, Miller has none. This one scares the bejeesus out of me,

If you didn't see Stephen Miller this morning, you have to watch this video.

I'm at a loss to explain it - I have never seen a person lie like this before. I mean, I know what he's doing and why he's doing it, but I have nothing to compare it to.

He is like an automaton - totally tied into an alternate reality. It will be interesting to see if he becomes a preferred spokesman. And quite troublesome if he does.

Stephanopolous utterly doesn't know how to deal with him.

I'll search out his other appearances this morning.

I'm not sure what else to say, but I'll figure it out. All I can say is, we have never experienced a propaganda machine like this before. Not even freaking close. Goebbels would be in awe.

Lunatic indeed.

He should be put into a soundproof box for the rest of his natural life.

more miller, if you can stomach it.

His message discipline is remarkable for it's depth and complexity. Any politician can spout a talking point - Miller is way beyond mere talking points. He is a very, very smart guy.

Oy, I'm barely beginning to grok Miller, and now I have to deal with this other guy? Michael Anton.

Let’s say you are
a top official on the National Security Council and Donald Trump
requests a memo explaining the purpose of his chaotic presidency. What
are the odds you would draft a 4,000-word essay arguing that America is
like a doomed aircraft that’s been hijacked by terrorists in which Trump
has madly rushed the cockpit and seized the controls but we still might
die because he doesn’t know how to fly the plane?

That would be an unusual memo, even if its first paragraph didn’t
actually evoke the tragedy of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed
in Pennsylvania on 9/11 after its passengers tried to wrest control of
the jet from its al Qaeda hijackers. Yet a senior member of the NSC
named Michael Anton has written precisely that justification of the
Trump presidency — not as an NSC memo, but as an anonymous article for
an arch-conservative website, published two months before the election,
when Anton was still a private citizen.

more miller. can't embed the video, but here's the quote from Face the Nation

The end result of this, though, is that our opponents, the media, and the whole world will soon see, as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial, and will not be questioned.

Looks like someone didn't like kowtowing to China recently, I guess.

Agreed, Miller is the most intelligent articulator of the Trump administration that we have seen. Quite impressive, despite my disagreeing with everything he says.

quite scary.

We was a top staffer to Jeff Sessions . He's like 31 years old.

Saw Miller on Meet The Press this morning. He is so scary and acts like a robot. This 31 year old is way too much in control of our government. Trump thinks he's great. His background is also scary. Check out Wikipedia.

Authoritarian to the core. The resistance needs to knock him off balance.

As tyrants take control of democracies, they typically:

1. Exaggerate their mandate to govern – claiming, for example, that they won an election by a landslide even after losing the popular vote.

2. Repeatedly claim massive voter fraud in the absence of any evidence, in order to restrict voting in subsequent elections.

3. Call anyone who opposes them “enemies.”

4. Turn the public against journalists or media outlets that criticize them, calling them “deceitful” and “scum.”

5. Hold few if any press conferences, preferring to communicate with the public directly through mass rallies and unfiltered statements.

6. Tell the public big lies, causing them to doubt the truth and to believe fictions that support the tyrants’ goals.

7. Blame economic stresses on immigrants or racial or religious minorities, and foment public bias and even violence against them.

8. Attribute acts of domestic violence to “enemies within,” and use such events as excuses to beef up internal security and limit civil liberties.

9. Threaten mass deportations, registries of religious minorities, and the banning of refugees.

10. Seek to eliminate or reduce the influence of competing centers of power, such as labor unions and opposition parties.

11. Appoint family members to high positions of authority

12. Surround themselves with their own personal security force rather than a security detail accountable to the public.

13. Put generals into top civilian posts

14. Make personal alliances with foreign dictators.

15. Draw no distinction between personal property and public property, profiteering from their public office.

How White House advisor Stephen Miller went from pestering Hispanic students to designing Trump's immigration policy

The president's young adviser was a provocateur in his California high school, where he was hostile to Latinos and other minorities. Stephen Miller wrote in his high school yearbook: "There can be no fifty-fifty Americanism in this country."

Another story on Miller from a NY Daily News Columnist

This remark from a Duke administrator says it all:
“He’s the most sanctimonious student I think I ever encountered,” said
John Burness, Duke’s former senior vice president of public affairs and
government relations. “He seemed to be absolutely sure of his own views
and the correctness of them, and seemed to assume that if you were in
disagreement with him, there was something malevolent or stupid about
your thinking. Incredibly intolerant.”

and remember. top staffer for Jeff Sessions. Imagine working with a man like that, day and day out.

an excellent post on 1930's Germany parallels, excerpting the writings of two leading fascism historians

from the above

Snyder also picks up on the repercussions of government facing down the press:

When you say that the press is the opposition, then you are advocating a regime change in the United States. When I am a Republican and say the Democrats are the opposition, we talk about our system. If I say the government is one party and the press is the opposition, then I talk about an authoritarian state. This is regime change.

It's a little strange to see people of color supporting Jeff Sessions. Every time I read about something like this, I become more motivated to research German history to find out if any Jews supported Hitler prior to 1934.

Whether Jeff Sessions is racist is rather less important than the facts. The facts are:

1. He will not use Justice Department resources to defend LGBTQ rights.

2. He will not use Justice Department resources to defend voters' rights.

3. He will not use Justice Department resources to defend civil rights violations in cases of heavy-handed policing.

So, we have to assume that all who support Jeff Sessions are fine with this.

...and no outrage about the tweets Tim Scott received, DB?

Miller was definitely reading off a teleprompter during all those interviews. His messages were identical, his eyes were tracking the words as they appeared on screen.

Everything is staged.

There are assh0les everywhere. I care about what the masses do, what the leadership does.

I don't care about nut-picking.

look it up

Only the fever swamp reacts to this nonsense.

And Tim Scott is a freaking assh0le for supporting Sessions.

I'm not too worried about a small uptick. Just wait till he destroys Medicare. I predict 27% favorability.

This IS a crisis. It's hard for a lot of people to see it, and I understand that. It is inconceivable to almost everyone that our democracy is not guaranteed to last. It's like a small child not being able to imagine her parents dying. It's inconceivable. The brain cannot uptake such a thing. Same with the death of our democracy. For those who have never considered it before.

I'm going to retract that graph. I apologize for posting it.

My bad.

More recent polling, using traditionally more reliable methods, show his popularity dropping.

Is anyone else watching Trump's Florida speech?

It is, by far, the most frightening speech I've ever heard.

Couldn't watch. Read the transcript. I agree. It's terrifying.
