TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR TUESDAY AUG 4

Model showing possible steady winds of 15 - 25 mph with gusts of 40+ moving in around 5:00pm.

I think it will be here sooner than that, perhaps as early as 3, and through sooner too, but more than one model has this feature so it is hard to ignore.

Will it be as bad as late this morning?  Less a question about sustained winds, more about wind gusts, which were pretty severe earlier.

For those keeping score at home, the above image is from the HRRR.  The Hi-Res NAM also has the feature but different timing

 Unlikely

I don't think so, but the potential is there.  Much, much less rain mixed in, though.

Center of the storm is now due west of us, between Allentown and Stroudsberg PA.

The back end of the storm has some rain in it but nothing like the front end.

There is a strong wind field developing in the back end. As the wind swings around over the next hour, winds from the south will swing around to the west and during that period could redevelop into trop force or near trop force for an hour or two before tapering off.

There are significant power outages regionally. There are quite a few trees down. Travel at this time is still hazardous. Stay home.

we are seeing this in Asbury Park.  In the last 20 minutes the wind picked up again from the west, and stronger than it's been all day.  No rain, and even some intermittent sunshine.  But that wind is scary right now.

I drove back to South Orange from St Barnabas about an hour ago. Lots of limbs down the whole way. A tree fell across Glenside Road but was pretty quickly removed. No damage to any homes from that one.

I have to imagine there will be more limbs coming down even if the wind isn't as bad as it was earlier.

Why's everything so bright and shiny outside?

Wind just picked up as you predicted

I can't believe I get to type this:

The back end is all wind.

Grew up near the south coast of the UK and a stiff wind off the English Channel was pretty much par for the course, so it is both comforting, but also anxiety producing, because apart from one historic storm we never lost power

One more hour, then things should taper off pretty quickly

Big ol tree down in Spiotta Park.

Nixle just posted that we are under a state of emergency due to down trees and power lines.  We are all asked to shelter in place.

Power has been out since 1:30 or so in the Jefferson area. No AT&T cell service, either. (Typing this from the car in a spot where I got a signal. Heading back to re-shelter.)

Big tree across Walton close to Jefferson- maybe this is affecting that whole area.

Name a Maplewood street which

in the last ten years

has had more downed trees knocking out power

than Walton.

This was the tree on Glenside Rd. No power outage.

This was weird - no breakage- just bent to the ground.

Pretty certain trees fall on Walton if someone nearby sneezes.

It’s also when I start thinking that this year has got to be the year I finally get a generator.

Don't forget to have either a transfer switch or an interlock installed on your panel.  We didn't realize this was needed when we purchased our portable generator.  We're scheduling the electrician to install an interlock later this month when he comes back to finish repairing all the damage we took from a power surge a few weeks ago.

We're in a hotel.

Stay away from the minibar!

I think I'll grab some scotch when we make a supply run back home today.

Anyone know what the rules are in emptying a refrigerator after a blackout?

This stump is in Maplecrest Park. Looks line about 30 feet high.

It's one of two huge trees that snapped.

Woodland about a block from Jefferson.

Ridgewood going toward South Orange from Maplewood is closed at DeHart.

I remember that storm. I slept right through it and then we got a call from school that it was closed due to tree damage. In central London. Heck of a storm, that was.

Any updates on power outages in the Jefferson area   I heard Sunday from someone close to woodland
