Look if you're a police suspect, and you're innocent, of course get a lawyer.

But sometimes you're a witness - and in most cases then, you don't need a lawyer.

You can parse and dissect these two situations all you want. Have at it. But to unconditionally say "if you're innocent, don't speak to the police" is goofy. And that's what was said in this thread. More than once.

Don’t talk to the police doesn’t literally mean don’t talk to the police. If a cop says good morning you can say good morning back. Jesus. It means you don’t answer questions or make statements about yourself. Your interactions. Your whereabouts.

Anyhow, if I (43 year old white guy with lobsters on his shorts) were a witness to a crime of course I’d tell them what I saw. If I were a 22 year old black man in a hoodie? I’m not so sure. Yeah I (aforementioned lobster shorted white guy) think he should but there are plenty of good reasons why he shouldn’t.

Officials have confirmed the body found over the weekend near Grand Teton National Park belongs to Gabby Petito, the 22-year-old woman who went missing while on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend, the Teton County coroner said in a statement.

The initial determination is that she died by homicide, but the cause of death is pending final autopsy results, Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue said.
