Emoluments, tax returns and debt

Trump wanted Obama to release his birth certificate, making Obama the first president to do so. Trump hasn't been asked for his, but he is refusing to release what previous presidents release as a matter of routine. If you think this is OK, you have a tolerance for cognitive dissonance.

I see this as what the requirement is to be president. Being born in the USA is a requirement. Releasing tax returns is not. Whether or not previous presidents released tax returns has never been a major issue for me as opposed to staged photos which is a major issue.

That's pretty facile. It never needed to be a major issue for you because previous Presidents just did it.

Yes it is simple and never been a major issue for me

It's not. Neither John McCain nor Ted Cruz was born in the USA. There were discussions and articles about this when Ted Cruz was still a viable candidate.

Obama's mother was a US citizen.

To my knowledge no other President has been asked to prove his citizenship.

Ok, USA or territories under U.S. control. I had no drought about Obama since I know, unlike the idiot birthers, that Hawaii was a state in '61. I don't think Ted qualifies but hey, rules have exceptions.

Does anyone see a silver lining from Trump and his agenda? Think there might be one, but don't know when or how.

If he swings the same ax at defense that he wants to swing at everything else it might be helpful.

Not really. George Romney, Mitt Romney's father, ran for president in the Republican primary even though he was born in Mexico. No one questioned his right to the presidency. For awhile he was the front runner.

Ok, when I immigrated here I was taught you had to be born in 'merica to be pres. an example of you learn something new everyday

The notion of not being able to release tax returns while under audit was dealt with nicely by Warrren Buffett.

Kellyanne Conway today said that President Trump will not be releasing his tax returns. This appears to be a permanent decision as she did not cite the alleged audit or any other factor that was ostensibly preventing the release. She used the line of reasoning that Trump supporters have been floating since the election that Trump's election win was proof that people did not want to see his tax returns.

This contradicts all polling, even of Republicans. It also directly contradicts one of Trump's numerous answers when asked about the tax returns during the campaign. Then, he said he would release the returns if he won. Now, he's saying that he is not going to release the returns because he won.

Someone at IRS should leak his Tax returns.

Or maybe someone should make up phony ones and say they are Trump's.

Sounds like his returns are perpetually "under audit" and he's fine with that.

Sounds like a nice protest for April 18th. Theme: You show me yours, I'll show you mine.

This is no news. He is a liar. He was a liar. He will continue to lie. His supporters don't care. We care, but it doesn't matter that we care. The tax returns will never be released. What matters is what he tries to do.

And the administration position is that people knew, or should have known, he was lying and elected him anyway, so that justifies the lie. It's exactly how he has treated all of the other people that he's swindled throughout his life.

Do you think it's possible to start a mass movement to refuse to file Tax Returns until Trump makes his public? Can that be done through social media with people pledging to not file?

I'd love that, Lost

You can start it.

However, what Trump did was legal.

Refusing to pay taxes is not. Penalties are imposed on refusers.

Why hasn't someone hacked the IRS, accessed Trump's returns, and released to the media? Unlike Snowden, I'm sure the person who accomplishes this patriotic act will be able to choose among many countries offering asylum.

ETA - Where is Anonymous?

A suit is being filed tomorrow, accusing Trump of violating the emoluments clause.

There may be a problem of standing, however.

I found people online who are interested in a protest. I wouldn't be surprised if someone suggests withholding their taxes but I imagine anyone calling for such an action would be treated to quite the interrogation by our friends at the IRS.

The IRS doesn't need to interrogate. Don't pay your taxes and the penalties and interest will do you in on their own.

As I see it, people are getting more involved in advocacy and activism. I also expect that the number of people who are fed up with him will increase. These two things could combine and make something good.

Very true.

Its like not paying a mortgage or credit card bill. What you get is an automatic penalty plus interest on the amount due.

ps - the end result is you'll be giving the Trump admin more of your money to "play" with.
