Do You Demand That Another Car Be Opened If ...

Kind of a rude response.

but isn't assuming it's a breach of policy is just as blind an assumption. And also assumes misconduct?

my assumption is that the bars that are used to close off a car would have been removed by NJT if closing a car was against policy.

Seriously?? How blind an assumption can you make?

I'm afraid I'm not following the bar policy part of the conversation.

I'm sure NJT has rules on this but as a veteran commuter I can say they don't go by the book a whole lot, and much is left to the conductor's discretion.

Standing between cars? I find that more often than not, conductors let this go.

Don't have your ticket app up and running? I see conductors say they'll come back but sometimes they don't.

Open train doors (for the older trains) at each stop? Some conductors open both, some will open only one, especially at night.

So I imagine the rules on closing/opening up cars often come down to whether a conductor feels like doing it.

This was part of my complaint to NJ Transit customer service. The bars are always up blocking the way for passengers to move to closed cars. The incident immediately preceding my complaint was that I lifted the bar so that I could sit in the empty car (again, because it was SRO and no one would give up their handicapped seat to me). Several other passengers followed me into that car to sit down. When the conductor saw this, he yelled at all of us to get back into the SRO car. Customer service said he was wrong -- but then again, as I said to them, who do you go to at that moment on the train?

this sounds like they do not have a rule against closing cars unless all the seats are taken in the remaining cars. all you can do in the moment is take the conductor's name and report to customer service. that was certainly an unfortunate incident. I've been on trains where the conductors have opened closed cars when all the seats were taken in the remaining cars.

Now we have different issues. Why is a car closed vs. do we have the right to ignore that a car is closed because we want to.

Argh, took me a while, but I finally made the connection to marylago's antecedent.*

*Not to be confused with complaints about NJT's anti-seating.

For the record, everyone is welcome to raise the bar on any thread I start.

Well, strixly speaking, the best Segway would make this entire transit discussion moot.

Well.... on the bright side, I learned a new word:

  • Strix (mythology), a legendary creature of ancient Roman mythology (a bird of ill omen, product of metamorphosis, that fed on human flesh and blood)
  • Strix (genus), the genus of large "earless" wood-owls
