COVID-19

@dave - I just heard on CNBC that Hong Kong is giving $10,000 HK, $12,000 US, to every resident to goose the economy.

NIH's Dr. Anthony Fauci is being interviewed on CNBC. He  reiterated that it was almost  certain that there would be COVID-19 cases in the US because of the fact that it has now spread beyond China. In response to a question about whether there is any thought to restricting flights from other countries, he said no because it is impossible to restrict flights since there are so many countries now with COVID-19 cases. China was a different situation.

Fauci is really good. He's very upfront and knowledgeable.

It's just being reported that the first case in Brazil has been reported - the person had been in Italy.

Yet, if Brazil restricted flights they would not have had this first case.

Looking at Canada:

Most of the people with coronavirus in Canada had recently traveled to
China or had close contact with people who had done so and were later
found to have the virus. This is the third case in Canada involving a
patient with a recent history of travel to Iran or contact with someone
who recently traveled there.

If Canada restricted flights they would likely not have any active cases. So, should they allow flights with the attendant surety of immigrating more cases?

Meanwhile, the left hand of government doesn't know about the right hand.

What the f#ck does Larry Kudlow know about public health and pandemics?  Idiot.

The FDA is really moving fast. Gilead is up in after-hours trading. The news came out at 5:00 pm. I have little doubt that  it was timed to coincide with Trump's press conference at 6:00 pm.

-- U.S. FDA Grants Investigational New Drug Authorization to Study Remdesivir for the Treatment of COVID-19 --

Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: GILD) today announced the initiation of two Phase 3 clinical studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of remdesivir in adults diagnosed with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). These randomized, open-label, multicenter studies will enroll approximately 1,000 patients at medical centers primarily across Asian countries, as well as other countries globally with high numbers of diagnosed cases, beginning in March. The studies will assess two dosing durations of remdesivir, administered intravenously. The initiation of these studies follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) rapid review and acceptance of Gilead’s investigational new drug (IND) filing for remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19.

eta - But if it works, I'll take it.

Trump is basically saying this outbreak is no biggie- it’s just like the normal flu.

I guess people who don’t think the flu is a “biggie” (tens of thousands of deaths a year) will not think this is a biggie.  I personally don’t fear getting it, but I am concerned for immune compromised parts of the population who are more exposed.

Pence will offer up prayers and then distance himself from the whole thing.

Trump Jr tweeted out that the outbreak illustrates the importance of border security.

I was hoping Trump would have been stuck in India.

I have to admit I'm spooked. My dad is 86 with some chronic health problems that would probably make a coronavirus infection dangerous. My mom is almost 80 and she's got some respiratory issues. Other relatives are immunocompromised.

So I'm wondering if I should be driving out to my folks and stocking them up with a few weeks worth of over the counter drugs like Mucinex and Tylenol and some food. Unfortunately my dad is in a very restrictive sodium intake so a lot of canned food is bad for him. It feels like an overreaction but they fall in the category of higher risk.

"U.S. health officials confirmed the first possible community transmission of the coronavirus in America, a troubling sign that the virus could be spreading in local cities and towns.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn’t know exactly how the California patient contracted the virus. The individual is a resident of Solano County and is receiving medical care in Sacramento County. The patient didn’t have a relevant travel history or exposure to another patient with the virus, the CDC said.

“At this time, the patient’s exposure is unknown,” the CDC said in a statement. “It’s possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time this has happened in the United States.”

...........

“Community spread means spread of an illness for which the source of infection is unknown,” the agency said, adding that it’s possible the patient contracted the virus from someone who brought the infection back from another country. It’s significant because it means that it’s also possible the infection is spreading untraced throughout the local community."

There’s always a tweet.

Could an emergency declaration halt the primaries or convention?

I’m at Terminal A Newark Airport waiting for my wife and I just saw four people with masks coming down the escalator to baggage claim - don’t know where their flight was coming from.

I guess we can expect to see a lot of that on flights now.

Yes, but your conversion is off by a bit.  hkd $10k is about usd $1,284, so about usd $2,568 for us.   I'm calling it the Andrew Yang one-month-test.

Pence (science background??) was just appointed head of US response to COVID-19.

I am sure his faith based approach to medicine will get things under control in no time.  I figured it was either Pence of Andrew Wakefield.

I read this just now:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/26/opinions/colleen-kraft-coronavirus-best-defense/index.html

It's from an infectious disease doctor at Emory. She stresses what a number of people have said over and over:

The flu is worse.

Hand hygiene and face hygiene (don't touch your face after touching surfaces) are paramount.

Masks won't help that much.

Over 80% of cases are mild and require no medical intervention.

She also mentions that yes, coronavirus can survive on surfaces for a few hours but only under favorable temperature and humidity conditions.

It's a very well-written piece.  The one unfortunate aspect is that millions of people in this country have been conditioned to mistrust CNN.

Mr. I : "So I'm wondering if I should be driving out to my folks and stocking them up"

As an alternative, could you get their regular shopping list and do an on-line grocery order for delivery? So many grocery stores (inc Shoprite) offer this service now. I imagine you could include OTC meds.

China agrees with US expert Dr. Donald Trump that this will all be over by April.

I don't see anything wrong with everyone making sure they, or their eldery parents, are fully stocked up with food and any other necessities.  It's not doomsday prepping.  It's just a smart way to limit the number of you visits to public, close-quarter places while this is going on.

Agree completely. I am not panicking but have made sure my pantry & cleaning closet are fully stocked and got in a slight amount of overstock on stuff I use all the time anyway (about one grocery bag full). Not all-out prepper, just a few extra things. Doesn't hurt anybody. I told my husband that now that we have these things the bug will go away, so I feel y'all should thank me. ;-)

I also need to talk to my parents (who are in their 80s, both smoke and have both had heart trouble) and see if I can talk them into grocery delivery. They are really cheap though so unlikely to go for it, and would be horrified to let me or my siblings pay for it. They are always stocked up with basics though so at least there is that.

Wonder who Trump will fire for this.  Maybe he'll let Wilbur Ross personally take over covid-19 testing as a "business opportunity"?

Did someone tell the markets that the flu is worse? What is the widespread COVID mortality, such as in Wuhan, vs previous widespread flu outbreaks?

Masks won't help much? I'm not sure but they do help. I've heard they won't help much from other esteemed medical professionals. Professionals belonging to organizations that have caused a cumulative backorder of 100's of million masks. Remind me why every medical professional treating COVID we see wearing a mask. Putting up with discomfort of wearing masks so often and so long that there are now complaints of pressure ulcers. Will we see this doctor treating in a COVID ward without a mask?

Would you be willing to visit an infectious ward without a mask?

I know this thread wasn't started as a Politics thread, but unfortunately politics is intertwined with this.

Pence being put in charge is not a comforting thought.  Not just for the obvious reasons, but also because it makes me suspect that Trump's been told that things will be worse than he's admitted publicly.  Pence could have been put in charge because the effort is going to go badly.

And then, Pence is the fall guy.  And new VP nominee Nikki Haley replaces him at the GOP convention.
