hmm, I wasn't familiar with The Apartment - it's on Amazon Prime at the moment.  I'll be sure to catch it.
 Me too!

I've seen parts of it on late night TV but never realized the connection to Christmas.  I should watch the whole movie.

Watched last night.   It was hard on my post #metoo eyes and ears.

Wifeski read my post and now I’m watching The Holiday again.

Is it just me, or do other people look askance at calling something a Christmas movie simply because the Christmas holiday makes a cameo appearance?

or, i.e. Bah Humbug!

They shot some of the exterior scenes for that movie on Broadway and 120th, using the Teacher's College building. We were living a block from there at the time. They trucked in real snow, and while it was cold in Manhattan when they filmed, there was no snow anywhere in the city except for that block. So, we had snow on the ground for about a week and no one else in the city did.  I always kind of liked the movie for that reason alone. (plus, of course, it reminds me of living in Manhattan-before-children...)

Always makes me chuckle when Kevin takes a cab from the Plaza to the “best toy store in the world”, presumably FAO Schwartz, which was actually located directly across the street from the hotel at that time.

Does anyone consider Die Hard a Christmas movie?

Absolutely.  Conjures up thoughts of Santa flying through the air in his sleigh yelling "Yipee-ki-yay _________" and firing off a few rounds instead of chortling out "on Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer and gratuitously tossing a few presents around.  Much more appropos given today's socio-political climate, don't you think?

The Die Hard “controversy” has been raging for years ... if it conjures up Christmas for some, then it’s a Christmas movie!

Die Hard, Love Actually, and Go.

definitely not Love, Actually.

By ten minutes in, I wanted to hang myself, actually.

Have you tried watching it again, actually?

Incredible as it may seem, you and I actually agree on something. What a dreadful movie!

 Fiddlesticks to both of you.

They could have gotten rid of the Alan Rickman Emma Thompson infidelity storyline, as well as the the guy who stalks his best friends brand new wife. I think I would have liked the movie better. But for the most part I enjoyed all the little stories.

 Noooooooo!

Well, if we're going to start shitposting on things, I've never seen A Christmas Story and don't get its appeal.

 But if you've never...

You don't

Isn't this...

Never mind.

I’m adding fiddlesticks to my list for Santa.

Now I have a machine gun.

Ho ho ho.

I've seen it once and I don't get it's appeal either.

Here's a short one Simone grew up with (from the 70s):

These are all on Netflix:  The movie, Carol, is something of a Christmas movie.  Carol meets the love of her life while Christmas shopping in department store, circa the early 1950's.  Festive, but much better than Hallmark movies.  I also watched "The Christmas Calendar" which was a major cringefest, and part of Christmas Wedding Planner, also difficult.  On the other hand, the holiday version of The Great British Baking Show was great. They brought back bakers from earlier shows and made it more fun.

 Totally agree. Terrible movie.

I'm wishing for a Wes Anderson sort of Christmas flick - something with nuance and existentialism and maybe grace.   Something that makes you think, is not filled with so much kitsch and sugar but just makes you feel that this time of year is a little different than the rest.

I always thought Grand Budapest Hotel had a wintry, festive feel to it....

I think Charles Schulz, Bill Melendez, Lee Mendelson and an 8-year-old psychiatrist beat Wes to it.

Except for the anti-immigrant police state theme.
