I am thinking about shoveling but wondering whether the wind will just fill it back in.
Thoughts?
I would think that shoveling in this extreme cold is very dangerous for anyone over the age of 40 or maybe 30. Aren't there any high school kids looking for some cash?
I shoveled at 2 pm for an hour. I think it was worth it, may even be able to clear what I previously shoveled with a broom.

Started shoveling at 11:30 this morning. Just finished clearing a one shovel width path over 225 feet of sidewalk and a narrow path from the house to the sidewalk. Still need to do at least one of the four cutouts to the street. Snow was too heavy for me to do more today. Will colder temperatures make it easier to move tomorrow???
Gracious!!!
What happened to your regular guy from last year? Give me the word and I’ll help you schedule someone for the next storm. Some exercise is okay but you shouldn’t overdo in this record cold!
Don't have a regular person. I did all the snow removal last year except for the two foot storm. I'd love some help for storms like this one. Snow is too heavy and what I do move keeps blowing back. I'll try again tomorrow.
Anyone know whether the guys from Alpha Sigma Phi at SHU are doing their voluntary snow-shoveling for S.O. seniors again this year? They were fantastic...

It is filling back in. I went over the same area five times thus far today. I will try again tomorrow.
Finished shoveling. It wasn’t too bad. The snow seemed to me to be of a medium weight, not light but not overly wet either.
I dressed warmly, with my hat down to my eyes and my turtle fur up to my eyes.
I'm 59. Shoveled. Haven't even napped yet. My next door neighbor, late 70s, shoveled. Looks fine as always.

Geez, where's Glover to explain why they call snow storms widow makers at the hospital? (Annoyed enough by the glib comment from Bub which disregards some solid advice that I posted for the first time in FOREVER.) seriously, heart attacks induced by the strain of shoveling are not uncommon.

Just finished clearing the snow. It is not filling in as much as I thought it would.
I measured 4.5" at 4:30. Still waiting for it to melt to measure the yield. Add that to the 0.4" from 7:00 this morning and we have a total storm snowfall of 4.9"
We are done with the snowfall. Dropping temps overnight will cause the piles by the street to freeze, so I would clear that now. Snow is a little heavier than I thought, so not blowing as much as I feared it would.
I will take a look at the weekend weather later this evening, and report back if anything looks interesting.
You only get to die of a heart attack once.

For some reason I was under the impression that one had to shovel the entire width of the sidewalk. Just curious what the rule is. I am by no means suggesting that Joan go back out there.
But at the same time if you wish to live in a residential home instead of an apartment or a condo, snow removal is one of the responsibilities that comes with it. Homeowners can tackle that task themselves, or they can make arrangements to hire someone to do it, but no matter what it needs to be done.

Okay - so you no longer have that guy - I’ll help you find a new one.
And you DONT start till the storm’s almost done because then you know you’ll have to do it over and over again. NOT a smart form of exercise.
Let’s find you a new guy and sign you up for Blink for a safer form of exercise I’ll give you rides when needed... Deal?

If anyone in the Maplewood/South Orange Area needs snow removal services, call 201-552-8031 or 917-284-3635. My two friends and I are Troop 5 Eagle Scouts home from our respective colleges and we will shovel your walkways and driveways for a fair rate.
Storm center has already cleared Cape Cod, and is heading towards New Brunswick (Canada).
The wind chill advisory runs through Saturday morning but winds and cold will continue through the weekend. Warmer temps Sunday night into Monday, with likely wintery mix of snow and sleet on Monday. Will start a new thread if this turns out to be serious, otherwise keep an eye out for icy conditions.
Total snow for this storm in eastern MAPSO was 4.9" with a water content of 0.61" for a yield of 8:1, a bit on the heavy side but not that bad for shoveling. Some other reports:

Joan_Crystal ~ I just used a guy on a recommendation from someone I trusted. I just didn't have the heart or want to shovel this time. Dave Zebrowski is great. He arrived when he said he was going to arrive, shoveled quickly (no nonsense), did exactly what I wanted and I think the price was fantastic. He is Dave Zebrowski Home and Commercial Solutions 1-844-ZHCS-BIZ.
If you want his cell number let me know.
Not suggesting that the homeowner isn't ultimately responsible for the snow removal, but that doesn't mean they have to do it themselves. And if I saw a neighbor in their late 70s shoveling I sure as heck would lend them a hand and send them inside .

Oy! If I'm still shoveling snow 8+ years from now (when in my 70's) feel free to ASK me if I'd like some assistance with shoveling. I may still want to do some (or ALL) of it myself but I certainly don't want someone ELSE deciding if I am fit enough to do any or all of it.
I shoveled and I am in my mid-50s. I have had people ask me if I’d like help, but I’m stubborn. If I needed help though, I’d be happy that someone offered. The cold air did make my lungs hurt a little...
As I understand it, the cold air plays tricks with your cardiovascular system. Your blood flow constricts in ways it doesn't in warmer weather and that's why people have heart attacks. Your lungs hurting could be another symptom of the same thing.
Would someone please post some pics for us who live down here and who are roasting in the summer heat?
