2+2=5

I don't know whether to laugh or cry

if you're serious, you might want to cry for your own inability to grasp the reasonableness of the responses you got. And cry for your dystopian interpretation of these legitimate answers.

This was primo trolling from the get-go.  The very brilliant and awesome ConceptualJames is a math Ph.D., so he knows there are legit answers in which 2+2 does not equal 4, as sprout has very simply and elegantly demonstrated.  So he threw the chum in the water so that he and others like yourself could come back and accuse the "woke" of being like Nazis or Big Brother when people pointed out this very simple concept.

so congrats on some big-time trolling.

Thanks, but seriously I wasn't expecting any responses that assert 2+2=5.  I am astonished.  This got so much attention on Twitter, that people started asking why he was seeing so many references to 2+2=5 on Twitter.  Here's an example:

Many people who were trying to disprove this simple fact had to play word games, or change meanings or not really add 2 and 2.  These are highly educated people and some have power in academia and media.

2+2=5 has been used as an example of the absurdity that totalitarian regimes will impose on their people.  And yes, the Goering quote and the USSR poster were inspirations for Orwell.  There are people out there that, not unlike these regimes, will tell you that there is no objective truth.

If we can't even agree that 2+2=4, then what can we agree on?

you got a really good answer right out of the box:

Yes, 2+2=4 under the rules of integer addition, within the integer system, along a single straight number line.

However, mathematics has many more interesting systems. For example, in vector addition, adding 2+2 is likely to add up to something less than 4.

And in Excel, it was super easy to get it to show this 2+2=5 sum:

(Can you figure out how it was done?)

and if you are going to be too rigid to admit that sprout's first sentence is essentially THE correct answer because it lays out the necessary assumptions, then that's on you.

Is the math PhD guy trolling the “woke”, or trolling the innumerates who think that the “woke” are getting “owned” by this?

It’s too bad Orwell isn’t around to tweet what he thinks about the diktat that 2 plus 2 always has to equal 5.

ETA:,Oops, I mean always has to equal 4.

Sure.  Pick on the guy that insists 2+2=4.

She didn't add 2 and 2.  Here's another simple truth 2 does not equal 2.4.  What is so hard to understand?   What would motivate someone to create such an inane example?  Further, I'm left to wonder what goes on in the head of someone who would wave that example around like there is some kind of point.

I'm wondering what you would do if someone on the left insisted water isn't wet and I questioned that.

Holy Jesus!  oh oh  That is good stuff!

Seriously,  you do know rounding is an approximation method.  Yes?

I say this with much trepidation.   Can we agree that 2+2=4?

you're trolling again, like the brilliant Ph.D., who didn't explain what either 2 represented.

tell me what the 2 represents and I can answer.  If it's two people plus two people, sure it's 4.  But if it's 2% plus 2% in the results of a survey question, maybe the sum is 3% or 5%.  Or 4%.  We've all seen the disclaimer "responses may not sum to 100% due to rounding."

Again, this is another of those examples that tells more about the anti-woke than about the "woke."  It's someone who knows that numbers devoid of context are abstractions, and then jumps on the people who point that out.

And might I add that, if anything, sprouts example shows the limitations of such approximation methods.  One should avoid using the term equals when using such terms.  Just because you can see something on a computer screen does not make it so.

What it doesn't do is illustrate that 2 plus 2 does not equal 4.

The tweet that provides the "theme" of this thread, in the first post, is kind of sad.  "This is a screenshot of people saying 2+2=5. You read that right...2+2=5. Among them are teachers, educators, and professors who plan on teaching this stuff to your children. So let's talk about what's going on here, why they're doing this, and how we can stop it."

It basically says, "They're coloring outside the lines!  We have to stop them!"

It also evidences a failure of imagination, and an inability to accept new concepts.

After reading some other examples, the whole #wokeminis collection seems kind of sad.

What utter horseshit.  You are adding context that didn't exist. If I give you a break here you're just not that bright.  If I were less charitable I would say that your bias is so deep that you are willing to do away with objective reality when the left finds it inconvenient.

I thought you were the party of science.

Could anyone tell me just what the **** this is all about? This is arguably the most stupid and inane thread I think I've ever seen on MOL. Shame on all of you who responded to the moronic OP.

It seems, Dennis, that there are a lot of people out there who maintain 2 plus 2 does not equal 4.

Are you going to go on record that 2+2 ALWAYS equals 4?

I'm not sure what that word is, but that doesn't strike me as a very nice thing to say.

it doesn't take too long for you to call someone stupid or venal does it?  You might want to ask yourself why you so often get to that point in a discussion.

Mostly when people maintain that simple truths are not true.  Is it better to act like a smug prick?  Go ahead and dunk on me.  Show me how 2+2 does not equal 4.

There are some examples in the first post of the thread.

is this how you always argue?  Do people generally continue to engage with you after this kind of response?

I'm just waiting for you to dunk on me.  Go for it.

Oh.  I see.  You're looking for an out.  So, be it.  I'll just think of you as the person who maintains 2+2 does not equal 4.  You just can't seem to express why.

Good talk.

This thread is a good example of why some people are better off being ignored. Trumpsters might also argue that comparing the brain to a parachute is stupid...

Really?  How so?  I have seen quite a few discussions on this and have not seen that come up in any way whatsoever.

We have agreed that 2+2=4 on the straight single number line using the basic integer addition rules.

You seem to want to only discuss this most simplistic 1-dimensional case, and also make everyone else agree that "THIS IS THE CORRECT ASSUMPTION" and everyone should immediately recognize this assumption as the 'TRUTH'.

------

But vector addition is a much used method of addition, which assumes there is one other dimension -- direction.  In some cases, knowing direction is necessary to compute the correct result for one's problem.

A simplified example:

You drive from your house to your friend's house by:

  • Driving a distance of 2 miles East,
  • then turning left and driving a distance of 2 miles North. [edited to 'left' from 'right']

When you add these two vectors together, you calculate the distance your friend's house is from your house:

  • The result is your friend's house is less than 3 miles away from your house (square root of 8 miles).

You can try it yourself in this vector addition calculator: (putting in the magnitude of each vector as 2, and the direction of the first as 0, while the direction of the second vector as 90.

The result: They add up to 2.8284, with a direction of 45.
