Don't worry, I'm in New Mexico -- right where you would expect to find a Jerusalem cricket, according to the Wikipedia article. The one I sawlast night has disappeared. Now I'll never get back to sleep.
I don't know if it's technically correct (the best kind of correct) but that's what I've always called them.
I just learned that you can email pics of bugs and plants to Michigan State University and they will ID them for you. (Thanks Reddit)

Very interesting. Google "potato bug" and Jerusalem cricket is the first hit. But I grew up calling these things potato bugs:
