VW Golf?

My VW Passat is gasping its last breaths (15 YO).  I'm at a loss at what to replace it with -- can't spend more than $20K on a "new" car.  If I stick with VWs, the best thing it seems is the Golf (I'd probably get a certified used car).  Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with the Golf?  Or any other suggestions?  I definitely need automatic transmission and front wheel drive -- no small cars, need a mid-sized sedan.  Thanks!

It may sound boring, but I would look at a Camry or Accord if you need mid sized.  I have heard of too may problems with VW.  I wouldn't buy a used VW.

I've had good luck with my VW -- except for the last 3 years when things started to go due to old age.  I don't like Toyotas (sorry, fans) and the Accord is waaaaay over $20K (I looked at that originally).  Thanks for your advice, though.

We got a "Dealer Pre-owned" four-door Jetta a couple of years ago. Solid, no problems, very nice.

Loved my Golf back in the 1990s, loved my Passât to 196,0000 miles, now love my Jetta. Love, love, love.

How do you (or do you) compare your Jetta after driving the Passat?  When I first bought my Passat I thought the Jetta was a poor relation.  LOL!

If you're looking at a Golf, take a look at a Ford Focus too.  Excellent handling, good amount of standard equipment and its in your price range.

Visit Douglas in Summit  and try several, especially Jettas.  Loved my Passat unless it snowed. I switched to off lease Audis and will do that again but my shopping experience was not pleasant locally.

Sorry so late to.respond. Yes, Passât seemed like a stallion after the Jetta quarter horse, and it proved excellent for six years. Answered all our needs. I think it was so strong we took advantage, carrying two kayaks everywhere and exploring nooks and crannies all around New England. But what a ride! Then, the retreat to Jetta was a return to the tough little charger. It's really a treat because I love it's moon roof and its energy. Knock on wood!
