VERY large birds in Millburn

We have a number of Cooper Hawks that come through the backyard every now and then. They are cool as H*ll. They fly in about 5 feet off the ground, and will snag a Dove out of the air. Absolutely amazing to watch. Much better than watching a couple scavengers pick apart steaming roadkill.

Cooper Hawks are amazing to watch ..... and when necessary they work in teams which is really cool.

I just find it amazing how they fly so close to the ground, dodging around trees at the speed they fly.

If there were no "nasty little scavengers" to clean up dead rotting flesh, your world would be a much stinkier, nastier, more diseased place. Vultures are a marvel of nature. Designed perfectly and specifically for the "job" they do in the great big eco-system that is the world you live in.

Thanks you for the blinding flash of the obvious, complete with a shot of sarcasm. I'm pretty much at a loss as to why you see a need to get snippy.

Please show me where I said vultures didn't serve a purpose. I stated hawks are much cooler to watch hunt than a couple nasty scavengers ripping apart dead rotting meat on the street. If you have a penchant for road kill that's your business, to each his own. angry

Whoa, Defcon are you a little touchy? I don't read her post as snippy.

Her tone clearly suggests I don't know that vultures serve a purpose, citing my 'nasty little scavenger' remark.

You need to a take a f**king pill. Or maybe it's just that time of the month for you?

grin) That's funny sh*t. You make a sarcastic remark, and blame me for it. Once again, please show me where I stated vultures didn't serve a purpose. You clearly saw a need to try to teach me they do, even with your panties in a bunch. Kinda weird, but hey, it's MOL.

Ok, now that the silliness is over. Looks like my buddy found his hangout for the day. Never seen a hawk come back twice to our yard within a day.

I like 'em both!

Don't flatter yourself. I don't care enough about you or anything you might say to get my "panties in a bunch." You're a legend in your own mind, that's for sure.

My money goes to the hawk wink

Agreed. Someone makes a snide remark to someone else and then gets offended when they respond. It really is funny. I expect the whole posse to arrive soon. cool hmm

Do not feed the trolls Defcon ... Let it be

So true, MATB don't feed the troll. Walk away.

Let's see: I have a penchant for road kill and I'm a liar, and yet somehow I hurt your wittle fuzzy bunny feelings? That's rich.

And you wouldn't know snide if it sat on your face and squirmed.

That said, I'm gave up getting involved in the "I know you are but what am I" game when I was 12. But have fun deflecting, projecting, assuming and denying to your heart's content.

Doing that right now.

I love turkey vultures! They fly magnificantly. They are all over NJ in great numbers. It's odd how I see them in the sky so frequently and others are blind to them. You have to look way up for them. If you think you see a hawk and it's hovering, it's really a vulture.

Occasionally, when I am at the Target and/or the Super Home Depot in Vauxhall, I see the turkey vultures soaring overhead.  I saw them today and -- four years later -- I was reminded of your post, Tom.  They are magnificent flyers.  They have the widest wing span of any birds I've seen in the area.  I think it's the way that they use the wind direction to soar and bank -- they don't do a lot of wing flapping -- that presents a very dreamy sensation. I always have to stop and watch them. Today their were two in the area above the Target parking lot, over Route 78.

My friend in Millburn told me that on Friday she was getting out of her car when a bunch, 8 or 9, of very large birds landed on the trees on her lawn and across the street. She isn't sure if they are turkeys, turkey vultures or some other form of large bird, Has anyone else had an experience with these creatures recently.

I saw a movie about that once. I'd be very careful if I were you. If more of them show up, we may have a problem.

Larger than crows or grackles. Are black vultures indigenous to NJ?

They are becoming an increasing presence and in some cases, they are taking territory from Turkey Vultures.

Found two massive turkey vultures on top of our garage --- then realized that our neighborhood's entire feral cat population is GONE. #ecosystems

Turkey vultures generally do not kill prey. They eat carrion.
