The Ledger Online - 13 months in.

More content, including more cartoons. Approximately 20% of the cost

AND

I don't have to go outside looking for the paper in the snow.

I have gotten to be okay with the Star Ledger online.   The downside is that I can forget to read it since it is in email and not laying on my kitchen table.  The good side is that the amount of news has increased a lot.  It is not the NYT but it does contain lots of NJ news.  It reminds me that crimes are committed in NJ everyday.  But the reason that the crimes wind up being reported is that the perpertarors got caught and hopefully punished and making restitution.  The ones where a PTA or Little league or other small organization or business Treasurers get caught absconding with funds always amaze me.

Serious question about the Ledger and NJ.com - how is the local coverage now?

Funny you should .... why just this morning, was an article about a house fire in Maplewood.

The local coverage in the News-Record is not what it used to be.  They have added several more towns so the news is very diluted.

Local news coverage as an institution is waning significantly across the country. I was listening to an NPR news piece about the problem. One statistic, and I think I have my numbers right, is that in 2005 they were 50 counties across the country that did not have a local newspaper. That number is now up to 200.

Lots of local TV and radio stations have been brought up by conglomerates that have no vested interest in continuing local coverage.

IF a Star Ledger subscription provides reporting similar to what  NJ.com offers (that may be a big if), the “Latest News” headlines now at NJ.com are not encouraging.

Isn't the Star Ledger and NJ.com the same news?

I find nj.com to be a shadow of itself.  Granted I get it through Apple News, but the only ‘news’ I see is high school sports, other sports with a couple of local articles thrown in

Apple News is feeding you a “curated” selection of nj.com content. Why you’re getting the shadow you get, only Apple knows.

The Star Ledger that I read is over 100 pages.  Has lots of national, mostly state and sports and other newspaper stuff.  It is much better than the Ledger used to be just before it went online.  I guess I am a fan.
