The Feel Good About Humanity Thread

Okay, I'm a bit if a sap at times. So help me out. Find stories that made you feel good about your fellow homo sapiens and share them here please.

I'll kick it off with this one about a little boy who went for his adoption finalization hearing. His kindergarten teacher organized a trip for the whole class to attend to show their love and support.

No stories come to mind right now.  But thank you for this positive idea.  It's a welcome addition to MOL threads.

Agree it's a lovely thread.

We had a lovely and unexpected encounter last week with total strangers, nearly had me in tears. But it's not local to you so I won't bore you.

Keep up the good work Mr I!

 All humanity is local!

I don’t want you to think I was fishing for the invitation cheese  Briefly, total strangers can be incredibly kind and supportive, with the smallest opportunity for generosity.
D locked the car keys inside the car after we packed the shopping. It was really hot, he’s diabetic and hadn’t eaten. I called the breakdown service for help; meantime the lady who parked next to us offered to drive us home for the spare keys.
while she shopped, two taxi drivers offered to help, and three other people came to check we were OK even though we were just sitting on a bench in the shade.
Total strangers, just being neighbourly.
We were safely home within about 30 mins.

Here’s another one worth looking up:

Two best friends at a Pennsylvania retirement home are proving it's never too late to achieve your dreams.

Alan Tripp, 102, and Marvin Weisbord, 88, recently released their first album together, "Senior Song Book".

(I can’t get the link to reproduce, sorry)

This is actually rather problematic. I'm a white adoptive mom of an African American child. Adoption is complex and involves grievous losses, for the adoptee as well as the biological family.

Copied from a facebook page.

That Adoptee

23 hrs ·

That sweet little baby is five years old.

He's the only black boy in the room.

He's the only adoptee in the room.

There is no way this was his idea, to invite his class. He's a baby. He did not invite news coverage. He did not invite the media and every social network to put this intimate and private occasion on television.

He's lost the whole of his biological family, and from the looks of it, all of his mirrors as well.

Adoption is so much more than cut out hearts and a cute poses and the nine o'clock evening news.

My heart is broken for this baby. Do not bring that "beautiful adoption from foster care" to this page's inbox. The Hart children would likely love to tell you why this is so problematic but they cannot, since their forever home drove them off a cliff.

All these days I had been reading the title as The Feel Good About Hannity Thread.

So now the rest of humanity can feel better about itself in comparison to me.

I used to subscribe to this site an aeon ago when I had more time to read (back when I lived in Howlong - remember then?)

https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/more/about-us/  Guaranteed positive news everyday. Worth bookmarking, and perhaps sharing around your workplace.

Sample item from the USA that shows how amazingly generous & spontaneous strangers can be, even now:

What’s not to love about emergency personnel doing their jobs in perilous situations? But then, they bring in the washing and calm the dogs, look after the scared cow...and write you a note explaining all’s well - mate, we love our firies

 Awww, that's great.

When I first glanced at the title of the thread, I thought it said Hannity instead of Humanity.

Thank goodness I was mistaken.

 What a dope.

What incredible generosity!

I'm sure it's made the general news cycle in NJ too, especially because it's not political (what a nice break, eh?); doesn't this kind of thing inspire one to see what you can do locally?

Every year this wonderful philanthropist gives out cash to people who look like they need a helping hand.  This year some bus drivers got to help out with distribution.

Another positive story about a bus driver:

Milwaukee Bus Driver Helps Reunite Lost Dogs with Family Just in Time for Christmas

Nothing restores my faith in humans more than the Christmas Truce.   The fact is that most people want to get along with each other.

I've been reading about people just giving perfectly good, empty 'spare' houses to people left homeless by natural disasters (here) or misfortune (the US and Europe, U.K., Africa) and I'm just speechless. Knowing there are still ordinary people around who see need, feel they have sufficient, and can meet this need without wanting fanfare (often their names aren't mentioned in the articles) is life affirming.

And last night and today we've had good, steady rain. That won't change much except our mood, but it all helps smooth out rough edges.

Every year I show a wonderful film about the Christmas Truce called "Joyeux Noel" to my students.  We talk about how easy it is to recognize the humanity in a stranger when we share photos of our loved ones and food.  For the past few years I've tried to use it as a reminder that we need to look beyond political divisions here at home as well.

A bloke near us used to do Dr Who, to the extent that his letterbox was a mini-TARDIS, he had a full-sized TARDIS phone-booth outside his front door and his garage (always open) resembled the inside of the TARDIS, changing eras every couple of years. He dressed like a Time Lord or a Companion when he left the house. Apparently, his collection of memorabilia is wellknown and extensive.
he disappeared a couple of years ago, I was a bit worried....read last week he’d married a fellow fan (of the more modern era) who lives a little distance away. They have a larger property with various life-sized Dr Who aliens either visiting or attacking scattered all over it, added to his other great self-built props. Everything works, so they’re regularly contacted by ad & film people and convention folk. And they’ve started hosting occasional small groups of school students for educational ‘farm days’. cheese

This is a lovely example of a kind heart and community spirit.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Jamie.  wink
