Take It Easy, Glenn Frey..R.I.P.

2016 hasn't had the best start.

First saw them as a back up to Yes at Convention Hall in Asbury around '71 or '72.  Saw

them again at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City with Poco and  Seals and Croft and Jackson

Browne and JD Souther were onstage.  Music that will live forever. BTW tickets were $6.

I read a few months ago that their tour was cancelled because he needed emergency surgery, and I didn't think that sounded too good then.  This is getting ridiculous, it seems like every other day someone has died.

not to be flip,  but people die every day

holy cow. I thought 2015 was bad.

wow - another person who didn't make it through their 60s. Very sad. RIP

No, no, no.  How can this be right? He was eternally juvenile. The Rabbit Angstrom of the ensemble.   But never mind Glenn, what about me???  Mentally, there's a part of me still driving around in high school and college with an Eagles song on the radio.  On Highway 12 in Minneapolis.  On the IndianaOhioPennsylvania yurnpike to the East Coast & back.  And I'd always turn the Eagles song up. That part of me canNOT accept that an Eagle who was not Joe Walsh has died. Does. Not. Compute. Friends, I hate this fact.

At the Kennedy Center Honors they announced that the Eagles were supposed to be honored but the group choose to postpone until they could accept as a group.

Liking "yurnpike."  But let's spell it "yearn-pike."

The 2-part documentary done on the occasion of the Eagles sorta recent reunion tour is really good.  Glenn did a kind of intervention with Joe along the lines of, you don't get sober, the band is not getting back together.  It worked (fingers crossed).  And now for Glenn to pass. . . .

God, I hated the Eagles. Such terribleness. Unlistenable. Banality incarnate.

Get out of my taxi!

David Bowie's & Mott the Hoople's drummer died, as well.

True.  But so far from New Year's Eve 2015 until today, there were 14 people that I either know personally or know of who died.  Too many in too short a period of time and I'm starting to feel my mortality.

My sister and I were just talking; she's in her later 60s and feeling much older. (A bad back and chronic pain will do that) Eagles' music more to her taste than Bowie, who was mine (hey, I'm under 60!).

People do get sick. People do die. We do hear more quickly of those we admire who leave use, wanting more. What's scaring her is that they're so close to her in age, and the news is so unexpected.

I'm sad to read of yet another death of a talented person, who was still actively involved in his art, his family and his community. I'm rattled that we're at a stage where my contemporaries are "old enough" for this to be not-so-unusual, but I'm really sad for his family, friends and colleagues.

it is a big loss when talented people with more to do die relatively young.

But as a learning experience drugs,  alcohol and cigarettes take a toll on the body.

Joanne, I've noticed that a lot of over-60s around here (i.e., btw New York and Philadelphia) are R&B fans. Not saying they're wrong, either.

R&B deaths in 2016: Natalie Cole, Otis Clay, William Guest ( one of the Pips ), Nick Caldwell ( from The Whispers). Nary a blip in the press, except for Ms. Cole.

Natalie sold a lot of rekkids. The Eagles sold a lot of rekkids.  A lot of people know those songs. it may come down to that. If Gladys Knight herself had caught that mystery midnight train to Georgia, that might be similar.

I'm on the side of you, and The Dude, on this one.

My sister's taste veers to 'easy listening', smoky jazz (Don Burrows, Galapagos Duck etc) and light classics, 60s folk and pop (not necessarily the ridiculous side of pop: she's a Beatles fan). I can't remember who she listened to in the 70s; her hubby has a really vast collection that embraces many genres, a lot of which she regards as noise.

Part of why I'm particularly saddened by the news is that, working with younger-older and very old folk, I'm lucky to see how even when they're not in great shape, they're still always creating and contributing. Our client group returned for this year just last week, and we celebrated a 91st birthday with one member improvising a Greek birthday song for her Italian friend, and six ladies dancing a (gentle) jive... In their hearts and minds, they're 42 and still hopeful and vital.

Australia has also lost some rock idols this year, including Stevie Wright from the Easybeats.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-28/easybeats-frontman-stevie-wright-dies-aged-68/7055924 Hearing that younger people have passed, through illness or accident, is so sad. It feels unfinished.

Gosh I didn't know that Dale Griffin of Mott died.  Very sad.  Mott was an underrated band of the 70s the way that the Eagles were an, perhaps the, overrated band of the 70s, though not without some darn good songs and I'm sorry to hear about Glen Grey's passing.

The Long Run was more my speed.  Glenn's soaring in Heaven now Tonto.

Glenn Frey was born on the same date as Doug Sahm, which brings us to Dale Griffin and this great Mott cover:
