The fact that trump is polling at 46% is enough to terrify the civilized world…after the convention her lead should be in the double digits… by then trump will claim he and MLk jr were buddy pals…

I am indeed terrified by the fact that he polls at 46%. And I don’t want the DNC taking their eyes off the ball. I don’t care if Harris are polling at 60% after the convention … I don’t trust our electoral system to actually select the more desired candidate.
There are decent people out there who believe in less government intervention, lower taxes, fewer regulations. To them, Kamala Harris represents a bad political choice. They know they’ll get what they want with a Trump presidency. The question in my mind is can they reconcile those political gains with what we saw of his behavior on January 6th, or the classified files in a bathroom at his hotel?

For me, one revelation has been watching how easily such a significant portion of the conservative side of the spectrum switched from being anti-communist to being pro-Putin. I had thought, during the cold war, people opposed the USSR on human rights grounds, but it turns out that for a lot of people it wasn't the state terror that was the issue, it was about taxes and property rights.

the same thing goes for their situational opposition to the FBI, CIA, etc...

One thing you HAVE to accept to support Trump is the idea that Russia is not an adversary, and that they would never do anything to influence foreign elections to benefit the Kremlin and Putin. And right now being a Republican that doesn’t support Trump is a shortcut to ending your political career.

I think the other part is the Christian nationalism. In that view, Putin fits alongside Orban in Hugary, LePen in France and Farage in the UK. I guess for folks sympathetic to the European far-right the problem with the USSR had been that it was officially atheist.

That’s a fair comment. There is definitely a Christian Nationalist subculture of today's GOP which makes them quite natural Putin fanboys. Although I disagree with their interpretation of Christianity.
I look at the coalition that makes up the Democratic Party and I am very comfortable with almost everyone under the tent.
I look at the coalition that makes up the Republican Party and I don’t know how so-called “moderate” republicans can stomach standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other factions of their party. Trumpism took over their party and most of them are fine with that. I don’t get it.

When you look at the ten commandments, I used to think the first few were a bit irrelevant. Don't lie, don't steal, don't murder, sure those all make sense today, but all of this stuff about having no other gods and not worshiping idols seemed mostly a historical artifact.
Then you look at today's Republican party, which has a very large number of people proclaiming to follow the religious tradition of the Commandments, and you see what they are actually worshiping, and think that maybe those first few commandments might deserve a bit more attention after all.
Say what you will about polls, today's polls are a lot more hopeful than they were when Biden was in the race. A convention bump would create a nice cushion. Imagine if Biden hadn't dropped out.
