Respond over or under quoted text?

I can't decide which place is better - I've been responding over -

quoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted textquoted text

but maybe under would be more sense.

Under makes more sense I think. I scroll down to accomplish that but now I see why there's space on top.

 ok - i think you're right

what? under what? over?

Under. Being up here to answer what's down there doesn't make a lick of sense.

Mom and Dad always scolded us when we talked over each other.

I think that it depends on the context.  I like having the choice.

There is always a choice as you can move the cursor

But there needs to be a default location.

We always have the choice.

But I think under should be encouraged.

The reason I like having a choice is that sometimes I am responding to an earlier post (and want to put my post under) but, other times, I am quoting another post for another reason (and may want it "inline" or under my post.)  Please continue to allow it either way, but perhaps position the cursor underneath, since that is probably the most frequent need (i.e. responding to a prior post.)

Re-reading earlier posts, perhaps we are all in violent agreement.

If it is just a matter of the default cursor position, then I agree with "under".

Under is better for replying to someone. Over is only better if one says "Northeastern internet commenters in the early twenty-first century tended to think thusly:

Or some such.

Back when email wasn't common, those of us who used it would reply under. Then replying over became common. I go along with it, but I think it's really dumb, because you have to read in two directions.

Somehow I feel like it isn't the same thing (email vs message board) but I'm having trouble explaining why.  (Gut feel.)

Northeastern internet commenters were habitually conditioned to approach different forms of communication with different protocols:

Despite these trends, renegades remained, insisting on treating emails, which were theoretically in response to specific entities, and online fora, which could include unintended recipients, as if they were the same.

I don't care. Either is fine with me.

At least it's obvious

 what is being quoted.

Another cool thing - the user link within the quote goes to their profile page (which will have a bunch of updates in the future)  Also, we weren't able to have an auto link and a quote in the same comment - now it's possible.

I hope that somewhere Gibbon, between footnotes, is enjoying these as much as I.

Under makes more sense as long as one can now easily respond under a quote without the response becoming part of the quote.

Yeah, under makes more sense.

I'm sure somewhere in the Internet archives are the old Usenet battles over top posting vs bottom posting.

If you would just join the Statists, there would be no need to refight the battles...

Resistance is futile...

I vote for under. I keep scrolling to the bottom of the post and wondering why someone quoted a different post without adding anything, then I remember and have to scroll back up

over?

That's crazy talk!

Can the text we're quoting be made to appear a little more obvious in the comment box?

I hit the Quote link and can barely make out where the quoted text starts or finishes.

As a Luddite spokesperson, I prefer  "under" .

And can we have a back to discussions spot on the bottom?

(After struggling to figure out what language some geeky posters speak, this is the best way I can describe what I think should be added!
