RCA <=> HDMI

I want to connect an old DVD(RCA) to my HDMI TV.  There are converter boxes and 3 wire to HDMI cords.  Do I need a box or will the cable sufffice?

Thanks

Might be cheaper to buy new dvd player than converting analog to digital

It probably is cheaper, and it certainly is simpler.

My favorite thing about the new DVD players is they come with streaming options. I don't have to watch Netflix or Amazon TV or Hulu on my computer

I shall bother to answer your question.

From what I can see from a quick look, a box is the way to go, and Amazon has them for under 15 bucks. It looks like there's a bit of electronics involved going from RCA to HDMI so that's why you need the box. HDMI to RCA apparently can be done with just a cable.

But I'm no expert on the subject.

And if you can find a DVD player with HDMI for 15 bucks, buy it. But I don't think they've broken that price point yet.

While you can get a converter box to digitize the RCA signal and output HDMI, it's not a very smart thing to do as you're taking a crisp clean digital signal, muddying it with the RCA conversion and then converting it back to digital. Maybe if you were saving hundreds of dollars you could overlook that sort of thing, but for a converter it looks like you're talking about $15 versus $25. And from a quick look the converters don't seem to come with a power supply. A converter could also be more annoying.

I'd probably recommend biting the bullet and getting a Blu-Ray player as those start at $40 or so. No use dealing with the hassle of upgrading just to get something old. But it all depends on how annoyed you'll be if 2 years down the road someone hands you a Blu-Ray disc that you really really want to play. These days you don't end up with physical media you need to play too often, but I do find a few occasions here or there when I play some sort of disk in my PS4 which plays Blu-Rays and DVDs, etc.
