Quincy's? archived

I saw that Quincy's was closed and took a closer look. There is a sign saying closed for renovations, but there has been nothing happening there for weeks. Is it kaput?
I heard this weekend there is a new owner...sounds really promising actually, but not sure what the timing is for re-opening.

Bye-Bye, Pete!

Met the new owner this weekend. They are awaiting approval for liquor lic and then will have to wait while it is transferred. Looking for a March opening. BBQ menu, heavy on bar food plus a real dining room - looking to lighten up what was there.

I liked that place, but it went downhill.

Looking forward to a change.

Yay! I hope all goes through. It would be nice to have a decent place close by.

There IS a decent place nearby (just around the corner from Quincy's, in fact): Hat City Kitchen.

Second that. HCK is fantastic.

Ah, but another good place in West Orange is always a welcome addition. West Orange seems to have too many rather mediocre eateries, from what I've tried. I was pleased to see Quincy's was closed and under renovation. We ate there once, and Mr. PeggyC refused to go back because he said the food was so bad. I like the new deep red paint on the outside... haven't seen the inside yet, but I really hope the food is much better and more interesting. BBQ might be a bit redundant, given Hat City Kitchen, but I'll reserve any other comments until I try it.

I was impressed that I saw the outside being painted. I'd thought the exterior looked pathetic for years. Had no idea they'd closed for renovations or that there were new owners. Hurray on both counts!!! We went a handful of times, really WANTING to like the place, but stopped going due to the food. I also hated using the bathrooms bc they were not very clean or well-kept, which always concerns me to see in a restaurant where the servers use the same bathroom as the customers...

Anyway, thanks to MOL, we now know we have something to look forward to!

(And, love HCK, but it's a bit pricey and my kids aren't exactly thrilled with the options. We will love having a better, improved Quincy's!)

The only restaurant I need in West Orange is Jimmy Buff's on Washington Street. It's the ONLY Jimmy Buffs that cooks their potatos correctly.

Please to explain? What is "correctly"?

Defcon -- I thought you once said Quincy's had good wings. I went there once on your recommendation and the wings were good. Everything else sucked. The table had one short leg and rocked. The decor circa 1975 TGIF fire sale.

Complete with a questionable smell...

All the other locations (which I have tried) don't cook them enough.

I liked their prep, they were actually nice and crispy.

This is very true. And I thought I had found French Fry heaven at the Gate for awhile, but it seems lately that they've lost the secret recipe. The last time I was there, the fries were excruciatingly undercooked. Actually, the first round was cold and very stale. We sent them back, which we never, ever do, and the second batch was raw. UGH.

But I love a good batch of fries, so I might have to try Jimmy Buff's. Now I just have to find the place... :shamed:

The 'fries' are not crispy at Buffs, they are part of the sandwich. They are thick, hand-sliced pieces.

Ohhhhhhh... wow. Never even thought of that. Sounds pretty interesting. Might have to give it a try anyway!

It's the original Italian hot dog, starting up in Newark in the early 1930's. It's truly Food of the Gods (to all those who think differently, face it, you're wrong), and is a complete meal. I'll usually have 2 doubles and a side of potatos if I'm hungry.

Bon appetit!

What is that place called the "Rock Cellar" ??? everytime I drive they look closed ???

Looks are deceiving. Parking is around back.

Jimmy Buff's secret is that they cook the fries in lard. One pound of lard for each pound of potatoes.

Yeah, they are good, but you ain't goin' to find very many cardiologists eating there.

Actually, it's soy bean oil. They cook the sausages, hot dogs, peppers & onions, and potatos in the same trough.

and, they only change the oil when 3000 hot dogs, and or 2000 sauages are cooked. FLAVOR FLAVOR FLAVOR!!! New one to open soon in Kenilworth. on the Boulevard(?)

Actually, it's funny you should mention that. The one in West Orange closes around 10:30pm. I'd get there about 10pm, the oil was much more flavored by then.

I need a new Jimmy Buff's t-shirt as mine has seen better days and is probably a decade old ... I hope they haven't changed them cause I never sausage a thing

That's what dey put on da shirt I swearz.

I drove past Quincy's today and saw a sign in a window that reads: " Coming soon - Suzee Q's BBQ." That's promising.

I'm not sure why... just because it's BBQ? That doesn't tell us whether it's any good, unless Suzee Q is a name I should know.
