Pop! goes the treadmill -- R.I.P.?

Hit the start button on my old treadmill yesterday, and nothing happened. Checked plug, outlet, circuit breakers, reset button, all okay. Hit the start button a few more times, suddenly heard a loud bang from the treadmill. No further response. Dead as a doornail. I'm guessing that loud bang was its last gasp. This treadmill is old and doesn't owe us anything, but I'm curious as to what may have happened. Any thoughts? Did the thing just short itself out? Is this how treadmills die--not with a whimper but with a bang (apologies to T.S. Eliot)?

I don't have tremendous depth of experience in this, but we do have a small training site with several treadmills used 6-8 hours daily. Nearly everytime the units have failed its been a circuit board issue. But I don't recall it typically being accompanied by a loud pop. Usually its been a quiet, will not turn on or will not run.

The boards are an easy but expensive replacement for us.

Guess it's time to go treadmill shopping. Sigh.

I suggest you call an appliance repair company. They may find that you need something easy to replace.

@tom_reingold -- Thanks for the suggestion, but this old treadmill doesn't owe us anything. We've had it repaired twice over the years--rollers once, if I recall correctly, and the motor replaced in 2013. I believe we bought this treadmill way back in 1999 for about $500/$600, so we've gotten our money's worth. Over the years, it's also become sooo noisy. We figured it was on borrowed time. Just surprised by the way it died so suddenly with that loud bang.
