Peyton Manning

Another athlete going down in scandal?  Another case where the cover up is, in many respects, worse than the initial bad behavior?

Very frustrating how the media is treating this. Very likely he did this which is why the school.paid, etc. But, he is white so....

the report in the daily news was only her attorney's position paper, not a complete summary.  It is one side of an issue, presented by an advocate.  Poor reporting.

The story is with the University's actions and not Peyton's. He acted badly and the school said no he didn't and blamed the trainer. He was 19 in a locker room with other 19 year old males and although it doesn't exonerate his behavior things seem funny at that age that should be taken seriously. It should have been a teachable moment for a 19 year old, instead it was one for a University that should have known better. The university should have shut that behavior down quick, instead they tried to laugh it off as a locker room prank and dismiss the trainer's concerns. She did the right thing by pursuing it.

I'm not defending him or the school, nor am I interested in trashing her.  I just don't like when only part of a story is reported.

Separately, I found Peyton's post-SB pitches of Bud and Bud Light to be obnoxious.  Does he really need to money that bad ?

A sexual harasser  Also, is there anyone out there who believes he didn't use HGH, that the deliveries were for his wife?  He should retire and go into acting.  He could play the Don Knotts character in a remake of the Andy Griffith show.  Or maybe he'd be better as Goober.

I would add a different perspective here.. I worked as a student PT in college for Football.  I worked in the locker room, always in public, with supervising trainers who were mostly men.  in order to learn, I did lots of training especiallly on wrapping. i wrapped feet, ankles, backs , quads, shoulders, knees and groins.  when wrapping, it is really important to position yourself ( both athlete and traner) to get the support right.  its also physically difficult, often requires very close contact, which if you are doing a quad or groin involves being able to touch, stretch and see parts of the body that, given the distance from privates, its a bit awkward for late teens early 20's for both athlete and trainer.

I worked in the training room, under supervision, never alone with players, but the nature of the job requires touching peoples bodies.  also, in a locker room of men, you are often seeing naked guys, who sometimes arent the most mature amongst each other.  Nodody ever treated me inappropriately, or made me feel uncofortable, but I saw more penises and butts than In that one year than in all other years combined.

The original complaint wasn't that the trainer felt awkward around naked men.

In addition to UT's handling of the incident and its blind eye to the larger sexist climate, the issue here is Peyton's insatiable need to win at any cost, even when he was clearly at fault.  Even though he got off lightly for his misdeeds while at UT (twice it seems), he couldn't let it go. Despite a NDA, half dozen years later he took a shot at the woman in his book, making accusations that played on sexist and racist prejudices. And after that issue was settled through a suit and with yet another NDA, he allegedly broke that agreement again when he brought her up during an interview for ESPN.

I agree. Even putting aside the original awful behavior when he was young, his need to keep picking at the situation in violation of the settlement agreement is a little creepy. And he doesn't have the excuse of youth anymore.

This also dovetails with his reaction to the HGH allegation. Whether he specifically directed it or not, people hired by Manning illegally impersonated law enforcement and showed up at the home of his accuser's parents. This scared them enough to call 911, and a few days later, the accuser recanted what he said. Meanwhile, Peyton eventually acknowledged the report which said that HGH had been sent to the Manning home, addressed to his wife.

No, he doesn't.  He wasn't paid for them and apparently Budweiser didn't even know about it until after the fact.

Peyton could not be paid directly to advertise beer. At least as of the Super Bowl, he was still an active pro athlete and they are not allowed to advertise alcohol products (which is why those classic Miller Lite ads always featured ex-sports stars).

He does own a couple of Anheuser-Busch distributorships, so promoting their products does benefit him financially. He also owns several Papa John's franchises, so the kiss from the eponymous pizza maker after the game might also have been grounded in monetary motivation.

Still doesn't explain why Bud said they knew nothing about it.

yes, it does. They have to play dumb because Peyton isn't allowed to endorse them. He pretends he loves Budweiser that much. Budweiser pretends he's just some big fan of bud and they know nothing. Then, after retirement, a magical deal emerges between Peyton & Budweiser

Good theory.  But it still is, after all, merely a theory.  Reality is, Peyton would EASILY get an endorsement from Bud without the SB mention.  No brainer.

of course it's a theory. he didn't share with me personally.

It's a plausible explanation that I shared when you suggested "still doesn't explain anything"

He endorsed the Bud the same reason he smooched Papa John right on the field right after the game. He owns a bunch of Bud distributors and a bunch of Papa John franchises.

An it is against NFL policy to have athletes outright endorse alcohol. Never mind how ironic this sounds since stadiums and advertisers push alcohol so hard.

Of course he said it for the money.

I don't have a problem with one more plug during the worlds longest commercial though.

If Peyton has erectile dysfunction he will hit the NFL advertiser's dream trifecta: pizza, Bud, and impotence.

He wouldn't have ED if he owned a couple of Quiznos'.
