NJ State Law Enforcement Officers Association: interesting fundraising method

Did anyone else here receive a letter from this organization thanking you for a pledge you didn't make? I apparently pledged a donation by phone on a day we were not in town. When I called to query the letter, I was told that the letters were computer generated and to ignore it. Huh? An organization raising money for law enforcement officers is generating fake pledges and then straight-up telling callers as much? Where would one even file a complaint? I would imagine this kind of fundraising, especially given that it's for law enforcement, is probably pretty successful.

Fake fake fake. This scam has been going on for YEARS. If you google the organization I am sure it exists. It may even have "real" cops as members. But they contract with a fundraiser and get a tiny amount of what's been raised, with the scam boiler room getting the rest.

In the past they've given cars and stuff to the "officers" that sign the paperwork. Let the local cops know, they'll hit the roof.

ETA: wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if they're somehow related to these guys, who were doing that crap in Jersey for years. They're like mushrooms. Keep popping up.

And yep, it's the same old "charities" from the last time around...

Local cops do NOT appreciate these orgs pulling this garbage in their back yards. Again, the local PD or better yet the local PBA will probably handle it.

ETA again- contact for Local 44.

Questions/Contact Info: PBA Local # 44 Det. Carlos Baez 973) 761-7924">(973) 761-7924 or Cbaez@twp.maplewood.nj.us

You will not be annoying them by letting them know this crap is going again.

They not only send letters, they call.

My stock answer, "We donate to our local PBA" is what I say just before hanging up. And we do. That's a good thing to do if you're bothered by these scam artists.

Don't even answer man. I knew people years ago that worked for one of these "fund raisers". They work out of a boiler room. It is NOT staffed by cops, although they will try to make you think they are. If you even answer the phone they keep you on the list because they know it's a live number.

Saying "take me off the list" will do nothing. These guys are rogues.

www.nomorobo.com is your best bet.

We never even answered the phone but were put down for a pledge anyway. That's pretty next level. If someone else in the household were in charge of mail/bills, s/he'd maybe just believe it and pay it (not in my household, which is full of skeptics, but in some).

Just FYI www.nomorobo.com doesn't work if you still have a traditional landline LOL

I thought it was invented for landlines and was then adapted for cellular? Why does it no longer work on landlines?

I've signed up for all of those things and yet my phone rings all day with such calls.

You need a VOIP landline, not old traditional copper

I wasn't aware of that. Of course, I got rid of my land line years ago, so it isn't really on my radar.
