Neighbor setting off fireworks -- is this allowed?

Normally it wouldn't bother me but my dogs are terrified and it's been going on for a while.. :-(

I think most amateur fireworks are illegal in NJ, plus they are probably violating noise restrictions. If you haven't had any success with asking them to stop because your dogs are terrified I'd call the police non-emergency number (Maplewood is 973-762-3400).

I'd just call the cops, going over there isn't going to produce results. What are you going to tell him that he doesn't already know?

This is particularly dangerous, especially since all lawns, trees, and shrubs are sodarn dry, no rain in weeks! What kind of idiot is this?

Let people have fun.

There are plenty of ways to have fun that are both legal and safe. Fireworks are neither (even without the drought to compound the danger.) And if they are annoying the neighbors, then that's even worse.

how often do they do this?

we've had police called on us for our once a year new year party. sick of police being called for rare public annoyances

I just called the police on youfor this post.

One loud public annoyance a year is one too many. For those who have no respect for others, the solution is very simple. Just move far away into the wilds where your insensitive stupid actions will annoy no one but yourself.

Some people are so damn selfish, they think it is fun to put other people's homes at risk for havin " a little fun", shooting off fireworks during a drought! Grow up already!

I am a level headed member of the community.

I understand that at times people have fun shooting off fireworks or doing things that are marginally illegal, at 8:45 PM. How many things are now legal, that used to be illegal? Illegal near my house is my neighbors smoking pot, and my other neighbors allowing adults under the age off 21 to drink booze, I think my other neighbor may not have their car legally registered in NJ.

My guess is that the police have 15 better things to do, protecting us from speeders, illegal right on red turners, and bicycle thieves, let along robbers, rapists, and other people who actually harm us and our property.

It is likely your dogs will get over it, mine usually do.

While I can appreciate some concern over the dry nature of the trees and shrubs, the reality is that the OP is concerned about their dogs, if they really were concerned about fire, it would have been in the unedited OP. I doubt we have to worry about that in Maplewood or South Orange today. Maybe in the very near future.

I generally wouldn't do that on New Year's Eve or the Fourth of July, but Labor Day isn't exactly a fireworks holiday PLUS the drought situation raises the concern considerably.

How about sticking to sparklers ???? They don't antagonize the dogs or neighbors and there's much less fire risk, although I'm pretty sure that they aren't legal either.

Seriously?? One is too many? I have a great deal of respect for others, but you poster are some kind of uptight. iI hope you never have a special occassion that goes a second past 10 pm

I wouldn't be bothered about an occassional reasonably loud party in the neighborhood..but if they have huge amplifiers/speakers and I can't hear my TV with my windows closed and the sound at a normal volume...that is too loud...and outright rude.....one time a group had the music so loud I was screaming to talk to another neighbor and he still could barely hear me...that was too loud..but as long as I can still talk over the music...and it doesn't happen often or run too late...its not a problem...i also don't want my house burning down because of fireworks...laws all around me are brown...even with sprinklers on every night....there as a building near me that did have its roof catch on fire 1 year from fireworks near by..

as far as the dogs...I taught a dog to tolerate the sound...when the fireworks (or any loud bang) went off, i would give her a tiny treat...she used to have a severe reaction and it was impossible to calm her down....after a while, when she heard a firecracker she would just calmly come for a treat....we did wean off the treats to only intermittent reinforcement.

Mind keeping the punctuation down? It was after 11.

This is not just an issue of disturbing the neighbors (human and canine) with short bursts of loud noise. Setting off fireworks with or without the proper training can be extremely dangerous at any time, with or without the voluntary drought restrictions we are currently under. Even professional fireworks displays require a permit and the presence and supervision of the Fire Department while the fireworks are being used. There are far too many persons who are seriously injured each year by fireworks that explode at the wrong time or in the wrong place. The laws prohibiting setting off fireworks, except by professionals under strict supervision exist for a good reason.

One forth of July a neighbor was setting off some fireworks. One went slightly off course and exploded on another neighbors front porch.

Aw, come on. It's harmless. Ignore the kids who get their hands blown off. That doesn't happen very often.

Or the time my neighbor's miscreant son was shooting off fireworks and one of the rockets set his patio umbrella on fire - which then spread to the deck. The kid and his friends just ran off - leaving his own house to burn down. The neighbor wasn't home - but thank god we were - because when we saw it we called the fire dept. If we hadn't seen it who knows what would have happened.

But a few fireworks are harmless. Doesn't matter that they are illegal or that it is disturbing the neighborhood.

And of course everyone is entitled to a fabulous New Years Eve party . But hundreds ( maybe thousands) of people in this community have great New Years Eve parties and manage not to disturb their neighbors.

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions.. The neighbor does it fairly often - sometimes on odd days (not holidays) and I've found the wrappers and fragments in our driveway (even though he lives a few houses away).. Which made me worry about a fire occurring.. I called the non emergency number and just gave them a heads up -- Thanksagain

All class c fireworks (consumer fireworks) are illegal in NJ. Every time I am annoyed by this some tool starts firing off mortars from their postage stamp lawn at 11:30pm and reminds me that restrictions are the price paid for the existence of the stupidest among us.

The vast majority of class c will not blow your hand off. That's ashcans, cherry bombs, and M80s, which have been illegal I believe federally for a very long time.

There are consumer fireworks that ncorporate those names in their products, but they're generally just a little bit of flash powder firecrackers someone branded as something else rather than the now illegal black powder versions.

For those who are shooting off fireworks in a safe manner- I hear you. They're fun, and if you're even halfway careful they pose nearly no threat to anyone. But people are stupid, so emergency rooms and fire departments are hiring
