MOL Hall of Fame?

Cross posted:

I’ve been on here a long time - since ‘99 or ‘00, and we’ve had a lot of turnover in that time.

I’ve long thought there should be some sort of post, and poster, “Hall of Fame.”

It would be nice if there was an easy way to remember and reference the noteworthy old posts and posters, rather than trying to search.

Not sure of the mechanics of it, but I really value the history of this site and it would be nice to celebrate that history somehow.

Edited to add: so many here don’t know of justmelaura, or BuffaloeJoe, or Strawberry, or sbenois (back when he kept it lighter -sorry sben), or Mem and her recipes, and many more... Classic characters who deserve recognition. IMO.

Seems there should be a committee to review nominations, but if the concept is approved by Jamie and Dave, I’d start things off by nominating Joan Crystal for her overall level-headed and no-nonsense service to all of us!

I think there have been a few threads similar to this in the past.

 No traction, I guess.

The idea stands.

I think the past threads were more along the lines of "favorite" posters.  There is certainly room for an MOL HOF.

So, a popularity contest?

If you care to put it that way.

However, I think certain posters and threads stand out as exceptional.

Might just be me.

Can a person nominate him or herself?

If they do it anonymously.

Nope. But you’d certainly be considered for your political contributions, I’d think. ;-)

I’d think there would have to be a longevity requirement. 5 years?

Just looking for a way to distinguish those who recognize the value that this site provides to our community, in a way that FB and other sites do not.

It may gain more traction as a poll. Well, a pretend poll, since we don't have actual polls on this site. And really, the poll wouldn't be the point anyway. Each poster that someone decides to nominate, would get nominated in, say, 2 or 3 categories. Other posters could add additional categories.

Then we may get some witty and some insightful categories, possibly with references to past posting achievements.

That said, I'm not good at these. I would just enjoy reading them.

The posters with the most posts should be in the hall of fame.

I nominate drummer boy.... he’s been beating those drums for years

Compilers?

I wrote a compiler in grad school once, for a simplified Algol-like language.

and here I was thinking my baseball comments were my best stuff.  long face

Please don't base it on quantity.  There are a few folks here who post constantly with nothing to say or add to the thread.  There are plenty of quality posters, like Joan, to focus on.

 Agreed.

Although a compiler like say, Tom Reingold, would have to be considered.

This makes me think. You might want to contact people to see if they want to be highlighted in this way. Some people may have stepped away from the keyboard and cringe at what they wrote back before people thought much about how persistent social media could be. They'd be happy to keep their old stuff buried. Others may not care and would even be pleased, but it would be courteous to ask first.

Deceased people won't be able to tell you and not sure if their families would want to weigh in.

Fair comment.

(I should probably stop responding, as I don't really want to be "in charge" of pushing it - just an idea...)

Okay, I have to say, I hate popularity contests. I will never win; and will never win. Reminds me of my public school education. Hated almost every single moment of it.

Of course nobody ever said it was about popularity, but whatever.

Will this be like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where someone who nobody thinks of as a MOL poster gets nominated?

you mean, like someone will try and convince us James Taylor really is an MOL poster?

I’d give up trolling the Meet the Mets thread forever for one more post from author.

Thanks for taking this in the spirit in which it was intended, Dave.

but isn't complaining about something like this quintessential Maplewood/MOL behavior?

I used to say that people around here would complain about free ice cream on a 90 degree day.
