Is it too soon to turn the heat on? Where's the heat thread?

I'm in flannel PJ's, fleece robe, socks, and shearling slippers, and I' still cold, but I can't bring myself to turn the heat on until others admit they've done it, too. I was hoping to make it to later in October, but I don't think I can hold out much longer. What's everyone else doing? I need a few partners in crime.

Since I have a Nest thermostat for my heat I can acutally look it up online. Looks like as of Oct 2nd we've been officially a Glenn Frey household.

its too early (but i am not in any contest) still shorts weather!

My thermostat is on 70, house still chilly to me, so I splurged and upped it to 72, hate being cold. 64 at night from 11 pm to 6 am. Gotta get the storm windows down, but Mr. Emmie has to do that.

I had ours on yesterday, but today it's too warm. I don't go by the month... I am guided strictly by how cold it is in the house. If you have layered up and are still freezing, just do it.

The heat is on in my house. 66 when I am home and awake. 62 when I am away or asleep.

I'm fighting the urge to turn it on. If I can hold out it will be okay for another week.

I had a space heater in my office yesterday. Resisting the urge so far.

We are having our 40-year-old boiler replaced next week, so we haven't turned it on yet. It's one of the old style boilers where you have to get down on the floor, push a button on the side of the unit, stick a match into the front of it and hope it catches. We've hated doing this every year, since it never catches on the first try. New one will have a much simpler start-up, so we're waiting it out. But it has been chilly. Good thing I like to have afghans on the couches and the beds (the blankets, not the dogs!)

I broke down at around 4pm and turned it on. Love the sound of that click-click-click-whoomph and the smell of burning dust! Ah, fall.

I never turned mine off. Thermastat called for heat in early October when temperature first dipped into the 50s.

cody, your boiler reminds me of the oven I grew up with. You had to turn on the gas and light the pilot at the bottom of the oven. I was always sure I'd cause an explosion, then I'd panic and throw the match in, then realize the gas was already on too long, then turn it off and have to start over. It's a miracle we survived. ; - )

Ours has been on a week!

Ours has been on since Tuesday.

I turn on the heat when I feel cold at home, regardless of calendar date. If the money I worked so hard for can't buy personal comfort, what was the point?

The mental energy expended to fill out FAFSA and goad a teenager to write application essays is keeping the house right toasty, thank you.

You have a senior cat. It would be cruel to not turn on the heat.

Yes, tjohn, she's been very needy and is decidedly lacking meat on her bones, so I did cave in yesterday, and it was a welcome relief all around.

Dave, all I can say is that these college applications are shaving time off my life. Paying is going to be the next razor.

The temperature dropped to 35ºF on Tuesday night in Ulster County, NY where I was staying. I definitely needed to fire up the pellet-burning stove. It was around 55ºF inside.

Funny story about that. Back in the day we had an oven like that. Most people did. Every once in a while we'd light it and it would woosh when the gas was on too long.

One day my dad, me, and my older brother were in the kitchen and my dad asked my brother to light the oven. So my brother carefully lights the match and bends over to light it. My father yells "BOOM" and my brother jumped through the ceiling. Good times.

fabulous, talk about shaving time off one's life - your brother definitely lost a few minutes from that one!

I suppose the one advantage of those old stoves is that you can use them even when there is no power. We can light our stove, but there is no way to get the gas flowing in the oven without power.

oh oh I would do something like that... in fact, I have. Fairly recently, I came across two women and a man looking at this house that was taped off and shuttered. The second floor porch was falling off. The guy walked up to it to look at the sign on the door and I said--not too loudly, but loud enough--boom! His friends laughed and then said, "It wasn't us! It was her!"

Is it too late to turn the AC on?

It's much too hot. I rode bike into work today and sweated pretty hard, and I wore a polo shirt and shorts. My office is over-cooled, and I'm wearing a sweater. I will not complain, because this building is cooled and heated unevenly, and any adjustment could make thing worse.

You beat me to it. I was sorely tempted to do just that this morning, but refrained for the moment. One more day of summer in October, and I may break down.

The icy stares of a teenager who is being goaded to write application essays is keeping the house right chilly, thank you.

I feel like I've been a slave to those applications. Every night, "Mom, what do you think about this idea for this question that only this college asks?", "Mom, can we go over my shortened version of the common app essay because this school has the same essay prompts, only it has to be 500 words instead of 650?", "Mom, can we go over all of my self-reported grades to make sure I didn't make any mistakes and end up in jail?", ... The whole process is ridiculous. If Trump is any measure, the requirements to be President of the US are less selective. Feeling overheated for sure, and haven't been able to get out to stop by for our sympathetic glass of wine.

What's a circus without hoops? Our door remains open. (Literally, in weather like this.)

Once the inside of my house hit 80 I turned on the AC. I don't care if it IS October.
