Internet Shaming

This was a TED talk that came through my FB feed this afternoon. I plan on using it to help continue my conversation with my kids about social media. They need to be aware of both sides of this issue - understanding that once you say something on the Internet, you have lost control of it; and understanding that being part of a shaming mob is not something to be proud of.

An attempt at humor basically destroyed this woman's life.

Twitter gives a voice to the voiceless, a way to speak up and hit back at perceived injustice. But sometimes, says Jon Ronson, things go too far. In a jaw-dropping story of how one un-funny tweet ruined a woman's life and career, Ronson shows how online commenters can end up behaving like a baying mob — and says it's time to rethink how we interact online.

ETA: Not like anything like this ever happens on MOL... LOL
