I'm handing out Reese's Peanut Butter cups. I was hoping for more variety - Stop and Shop was cleaned out yesterday afternoon. CVS had a decent supply or Reeses.
This is the perfect storm scenario for candy needs. Sunday, so working parents of younger kids have more time to spend taking them out. Nice weather, not too cold or wet. COVID-levels down, and demand for trick-or-treating up.
Half of the candy we ordered hasn't arrived yet (thank you supply chain woes). The half we received ran out quickly (on our hill, which gets almost no trick-or-treaters in an average year), and spouse is out picking up what he can so we can give out more.
We rarely get many trick-or-treaters. It's a lot of steps uphill to our door. But today we've had the most visitors in the 21 years we've lived here. Had to run out and buy more candy this afternoon. So the kids are getting Christmas themed York peppermint patties

We had a heavy run early (since parents of younger kids didn't have to wait until after work), but then it reverted to a standard very slow day on our no-sidewalk hill-climbing street. So the emergency candy my husband bought mostly becomes "house" candy.
i was in a supermarket around 6:30pm....all the halloween candy was gone as well as the snack sizes from the regular candy aisle...they already had Christmas candy out.
A friend who lives in south Jersey said her town set up a system where people could donate candy in advance to the busiest neighborhoods. I don't know which Maplewood neighborhoods get the most trick-or-treaters but I know I would happily buy candy for them to distribute.
Anyone know where to donate leftovers? I bought way too much as usual and my office (which collects candy to send to the troops abroad) is still closed.
For the last dozen or so years (when we weren't shut down by storms, COVID, etc.) we have given out Halloween themed rubber duckies from Oriental Trading. Most of the time, we get lots of "oohs" and "ahs" and "that's cool" reactions from the trick or treaters although there is the occasional "I wanted candy." But the positive reactions far outnumber the negative and the great thing about non-edible treats is that you can save the leftovers for next year. Due to over-ordering a couple of years ago, we still have enough for at least two more years before we will need to place another order. Another bonus - these "treats" are fine for kids with food allergies.
i also normally do small toys instead of candy. I have steps to get to my front door and am disabled so I can't be running up and down. pre covid, i just left the bucket out with a take 1 sign and most people didn't take a lot...where as candy tended to disappear quickly.
