General Rush tickets on Broadway -- does this actually work?

Has anyone lined up for general rush tickets (low-priced, only at box office at time of seating, depending on availability) for a major Broadway show? Considering seeing Chicago on a weekday evening but don't want to schlepp in if there's really no chance of getting seats.

Actually at the box office when it opens, same-day.

Also check out the app "TodayTix" for discounted tickets for last minute shows and online lotteries. I've won $20 tickets to On the Town a few times.

I've done this but I've never won a lottery for the shows (mainly musicals) that do that.
