Can my employer see?

Maybe a dumb/naive question.

I have the app Okta on my personal phone. I use it to access the security code to log in to my employer’s VPN on my employer-provided laptop. So, phone with Okta is mine. Laptop is employer’s.

Since I downloaded an app required by my employer, does my employer have access to activity on my phone?

I don't think it has capability to track info on your phone.  I believe it's mainly to verify the person accessing the computer is ok - that's it.

Would that be true if the laptop and phone are synced?

Okta isn't a tracker; you don't need to worry about your employer using it to spy on your phone.

One thing Okta does record is the time and location you logged in from. I don't know if that info is available to your employer, but if you're supposed to be at the office and log in from home, that is one thing to keep in mind.

not sure what you mean by "synced" here, but, if any data is copied from the phone to the laptop, and if the employer has the means and the lack of moral character to examine the contents of the laptop, then yes, the employer could see private info that originated from the phone.

lots of ifs though. and one wouldn't normally sync their personal phone with a work laptop.

Why are you using a personal phone to verify identity for the company's VPN? If they want you to use this app, they should be paying for a work phone.

Because I don't want an extra phone.

Nice to see you post, I wondered where you were.

Understandable.

I agree with Jamie’s feedback further up the thread.
