Best sources for local happenings/events?

Moving to South Orange in the Spring. What are some good sources to find out local SOMA happenings/events? I am not from NJ, so not familiar with local papers or websites. Stumbled onto this site. Everyone here has been so helpful so far. No wonder I picked this friendly town oh oh

We have a lot of events submitted to our calendar here:

https://maplewood.worldwebs.com/calendar - you can also see highlighted event randomly on the rightside of the forum (desktop view)

Also - sign up for our emailer here:

https://maplewood.worldwebs.com/signup/newsletter

We usually send out a email every Friday that will highlight local happenings.

Here's a few others:

SOPAC - http://sopacnow.org

http://www.maplewoodartsandculture.org/upcoming-events

Here's another one for South Orange Village Center

https://www.sovillagecenter.org/pub/event

Unfortunately, there's really no one-stop shop for things going on in SOMA, but there is always something cool happening somewhere.

The Maplewood Village Alliance has a similar page for the Village: http://maplewoodvillagenj.com/ but it's rarely updated.

Springfield Avenue Partnership also has a page that looks better: https://www.springfieldavenue.com/all-events

Thank you. Agreed- so much cool stuff. That 's why we chose to live here oh oh

This requires a subscription, but they do a great job of reporting on what's happening in the two towns and it's well worth it.You can get a monthly or annual subscription  - perhaps get a monthly subscription to try it for a while.

Thank you again Cramer. I had seen this but didn't know if it was worth subscribing. Much thanks for the feedback.

NJNext, which is operated by the Village Green folks, sends me weekly emails of local events that look like this:

https://us17.campaign-archive.com/?e=e0c99e557a&u=916f21dddd8ba64fd8a14f898&id=838dad0f9e

Here’s the website, where you can sign up for them if you’d like: https://njnext.com/

A number of events have become 'staples' in the community, but you will find reminders on MOL and many other places.  Some examples are:

  • July 4th celebrations in Maplewood
  • Maplewoodstock concert weekend
  • Morrow Church 'TurnOver' (rummage sale)
  • Rent Party (concert series raising funds for food pantries)

Where are you coming from? Plenty of transplants here, quite a few of us from NYC, even many posters that have moved away and at least 2 fun posters who drop a line from Australia!

Very cool people in The Maplewood Garden Club http://maplewoodgardenclub.org/.

Monthly talks at the Maplewood Library, open to non members, but if you want to get your hands dirty, join and volunteer at the plant sale, holiday decorating, working at the herb garden etc. Cool competitions for those who want participate. My friend is very active and makes the most beautiful wreaths ever. If you decide to attend a meeting to get to know a few locals, I'll put you in touch with her.

If you want to cover yourself in pet hair, PM me and I can get you involved with fostering anything from kittens, pregnant felines, nursing moms and kittens, bottle babies, adult cats, or dogs. A couple of us do pet rescue in South Orange and Maplewood.

And if you want to get a taste of local politics there are Board of Trustee meetings open to the public at SOPAC (South Orange Performing Art Center). Residents have an opportunity to speak about issues during the open comment section.

If you are an artist, or just enjoy art, you can join us on the South Orange Maplewood Artists Studio Tour where dozens of us open our home studios to the public for a weekend in the fall. Check this site to get a sampling of our work. https://studiotoursoma.com/

Also fun is the Historic Homes Tour.

Lots to do, lots of cool welcoming people.

And if you just want to rant about politics or discuss any topic under the sun, keep chatting with us here on MOL. Open all night.

Moving from Manhattan. Had a house in the Catskills for many years until recently where I fell in love with birdwatching.  Your birding thread brought me joy! All of your information was so helpful. We are closing on a house in SO in mid April and moving in at the end of June. I will stay on MOL in the meantime and plan to PM when we land in SO. Your suggestions were so up my alley it would be great to touch base.

Thank you. I am admittedly excited for all of these.

SOMA Two Towns For All Ages sends out a monthly event calendar.  Entries are geared to Maplewood and South Orange Seniors; but many are of interest to everyone. https://www.somatwotownsforallages.org to sign up and for additional information.

I considered adding the Brit pantos to my list, but with my Viking background, couldn't quite get myself to go as far as promoting a Brit event.
