Auto insurance rate rise!

I noticed that my auto insurance rates have gone up about 50. a month. New car. No accidents. When I called and asked why, I was told, "The rates have gone up in NJ." Is that true or b.s.?  The year total is abt. 2000 for one car, two adult drivers. We use the same insurance company for the house, so the home and car are tied together in some kind of 'deal.'

My renewal just came in with a $19 increase which is 9%.  I went online to Geico and was shocked to see the same coverage is half the price of what I am paying now.

I was paying 365 a month with USAA - 4 drivers (2 young) and 2 cars - excellent company and claims service.

Switched to Geico, same coverage - 135 a month!

my insurance went up about 200 last year (CURE)...i contacted them and told them if they couldn't do better, I'd take my business elsewhere...the suddenly found a long term customer discount I was eligible for...

2 cars, 2 drivers, $1700/yr. Progressive

Posting my rate won't matter since so many things go into a rate, age of car, type of coverage, type of deductible, etc.  I will say that we have NJM and this year our rate went down by a couple of hundred.  No changes except that my husband just turned 40, so I am guessing that milestone probably comes with a lower rate.

For the OP, you say "new car."  Is this car new this policy year?  If last year you had a ten year old car and now you traded it in for a new car and you have full coverage then the new car will have a higher collision rate since it would cost them more to replace if you total it.

Oddly, my rates went down when I replaced an older car with a new one.  I suspect that it had to do with additional safety features which make it less likely for vehicle occupants to suffer a severe injury in an accident.

eta:  My rates went up this year by about 10% if I recall correctly.

Mine just went up $10/month too. I asked my company what happened and they too said "due to an increase in claims in your area, rates have gone up."

yes, rates in NJ are up. It's not BS. That said, there are many options, some more affordable for the same coverage. You HAVE to compare apples to apples.

My usaa was $$ and I found GEICO to be cheaper initially, but now three years later, they have inched up.
