Making music is one of the most enjoyable, thought-provoking, and fulfilling pursuits that one can undertake. Music is both a deep art form, capable of conveying the entirety of the human experience in sound, as well as a form of universal entertainment. Through the piano, my students learn to express themselves through sound, explore their imagination, and challenge themselves to develop into musical artists. In piano lessons we will work on the skills necessary to becoming a musician and gain an understanding of how to create music, both from the printed score and from students’ own imaginations.
While the study of music requires dedication, it is through this hard work that students find both enjoyment and accomplishment. After all, musical study imparts lessons that are applicable to life away from the piano as well, including perseverance, discipline, self-awareness, independent problem-solving, patience, and a love for learning. In general, I want to help students find their own unique voice and their love for making and sharing music.
Each week, students will:
Develop music-reading skills in order to play music from the score
Work to understand and play with musicality and expressiveness
Refine technical proficiency in order to control the instrument
Study the theory of music to understand how music works
Train the ear to aurally identify musical patterns and qualities
Additional exercises include: Improvisation and composition drills
Listening exercises in lessons and at home from lending CDs
Performance etiquette and practice
I am an active local pianist and music teacher and my performances have taken me from Vienna to a live radio broadcast in Chicago to Carnegie Hall. I am on the faculty at the Montclair State University Cali School of Music, the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts, the Montclair State University Preparatory Center for the Arts, and the Lindeblad School of music. Recently, I also taught actress Jessica Chastain as she prepared for her role in the film "The Zookeeper's Wife" and worked with the director Niki Caro to select music for the film.
I hold a Doctorate in Musical Arts from Rutgers University in piano performance as well as a Master of Music degree at the Mannes College of Music in New York City and Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Math degrees from Northwestern University. My music studies have also brought me to the Universität fur Musik Wien, the Manhattan School of Music, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, where I have performed as a soloist, a chamber musician and accompanist.
Here is a video of a recent concerto performance: Mozart K.467 - I - Allegro Maestoso
