SORRY, EVENT POSTPONED. To be rescheduled! November 4 Newark Museum Curator to speak on Newark Jewelry History at Maplewood Library On Sunday November 4 at 2:00 pm, the Durand-Hedden House will present Newark Museum curator Ulysses Dietz, speaking on Newark’s emergence between 1830 and 1850 as the greatest center of fine gold jewelry production in the US. As the industry grew over the next 80 years, it developed into a vital center of businessmen, craftsmen and designers. James Madison Durand, who grew up in the Durand-Hedden House, became one of the city’s most successful jewelry manufacturers. Mr. Dietz’s talk is based on an exhibition and book, The Glitter and The Gold: Fashioning America’s Jewelry produced at the Newark Museum in 1997. The Museum, at which Mr. Dietz has been the Curator of Decorative Arts since 1980, has the most important collection of Newark-made jewelry and precious metal objects in the nation. As Maplewood’s historical society, the Durand-Hedden House and Garden Association is dedicated to telling the story of the development of Maplewood and the surrounding area in new and engaging ways. Please note that the location of this program has been moved to Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., Maplewood.
