CLASSIC MAPLEWOOD CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS A PERFORMANCE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE FEATURING Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, AT THE WOODLAND

The Maplewood Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs will present a “Young People’s” classical music concert on Sunday January 20, at 2:00 pm in the Great Hall at the Woodland. This concert is free and open to the public.

The program includes two enduring favorites for young audiences, Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev and Carnival of the Animals by Camille St. Saëns. Boasting whimsical orchestrations and humorous narration, both pieces are renowned for making classical music fun and accessible for children and adults

Peter and the Wolf is a symphonic fairy tale in which each character of the fabled story is represented by an instrument. The duck for example will be played by the oboe. The cat by the clarinet, the wolf by the French horns and Peter by the Strings.

Carnival of the Animals has been described as a musical trip to the zoo filled with an uncle's bad jokes and puns. “Tortoises- Come crown my brow with leaves of myrtle, I know the tortoise is a turtle”, and “The Cuckoo- Cuckoos lead bohemian lives, they fail as husbands and as wives”.

The concert will be performed by the Maplewood Camerata, a 15 member ensemble made up of superb local musicians. Once again Leo Grinhauz, a cellist and Maplewood resident has worked closely with the Office of Cultural Affairs to put this performance and the entire Classic Maplewood concert series together.

Narration for both Peter and the Wolf and Carnival of the Animals will be provided by a roster of local notables including Mayor Victor DeLuca, rising star Gregory Osborne, Township Committee member Dean Dafis, and the multi-talented Danielle Perrotta.

This entertaining program runs approximately 65 minutes including intermission, and is ideal adults as well as children.
